Twitch defaults Amazon AI training on, buries opt-out in security settings

Twitch has begun sending creator streams to generative AI models built by its parent company Amazon. All channels are opt-in automatically.

If anyone wants to opt out, they have to go through account settings to turn it off.

Twitch’s product chief admits nobody would opt-in

Head of Community Mary Kish and Chief Product Officer Mike Minton answered questions from about 3,000 viewers on the platform’s official channel. And many spammed the chat with anti-AI messages.

When asked why the feature isn’t opt-in, Minton replied, “If this was opt-in, nobody would opt in. That’s honestly the answer.”

Creators are streaming their faces and voices for hours every week. Those recordings provide Amazon with a deep library of audio and video to train on.

Creators weren’t sure if their work had already gone to Amazon with the soft framing. One viewer asked Minton whether Amazon had used their videos.

“I don’t actually know the answer to that question because I don’t know what Amazon has done in terms of model training and what they’ve used and not used,” he said.

Kish said that offering an opt-out at all was Twitch “reacting to this community’s voice.”

The opt-out sits three steps into privacy settings

Twitch never announced that Amazon would start training on user content.

Instead of that, the company said it had “added a setting that lets you opt out of having your channel content used to train generative AI content models across Amazon,” according to a post by @TwitchSupport.

Opting out of training Amazon’s AI models requires multiple steps. Instead of using the creator dashboard, the user has to go to channel settings. Then go to the security and privacy tab, scroll down to the option called “training for generative AI,” and turn it off.

Meta trains on public Facebook and Instagram posts. According to Cryptopolitan, LinkedIn in 2025 planned to train generative AI on member profiles, posts, and resumes in several regions. Users were pushed to a buried toggle under “Data for Generative AI Improvement” to opt out.
