BOJ Rate Hike Pace Could Speed Up as Inflation Nears Target

The Bank of Japan’s latest policy meeting pointed to a possible acceleration in interest rate hikes, with at least three board members saying the central bank could raise rates faster than its current pace.

The comments appeared in the BOJ’s summary of opinions from its July 30-31 meeting, released Monday, after policymakers kept the benchmark rate at 1%.

BOJ Officials Shift Focus Toward Inflation Risks

The latest comments suggest growing support for a faster tightening cycle within the nine-member policy board. One member argued that the BOJ should give greater weight to upside price risks than it previously did.

“Given that underlying CPI inflation has been approaching 2% and greater consideration should be given to upside risks to prices than before, it could be considered that the pace of policy interest rate hikes will be faster than market expectations,” the member said.

Another member argued that the pace of adjustment should be accelerated to the degree of monetary accommodation.

“The risk of waiting is no longer marginal,” the member stated.

A third member urged the BOJ to avoid following a predetermined hiking schedule. Instead, the member called for the central bank to signal clearly that it would respond to “prevent upward deviation in prices.”

The BOJ has already signaled that it could raise rates in September, while closely monitoring the weak yen’s impact on prices and economic growth.

At its July meeting, policymakers voted 8-1 to keep the policy rate at 1%. Board member Hajime Takata dissented, proposing an increase to 1.25%. Meanwhile, Japan’s core inflation rate stood at 1.6% in July.

Why Faster BOJ Hikes Could Matter for Crypto

A faster BOJ tightening cycle could affect crypto through global liquidity rather than Japan’s domestic economy alone.

For years, investors have used the yen’s relatively low funding costs to borrow yen and invest in higher-yielding assets. A sharper rise in Japanese rates can reduce that incentive.

If investors unwind those positions, they may sell riskier assets to repay yen-denominated funding. Bitcoin (BTC) and other cryptocurrencies could face additional selling pressure if the process coincides with a weaker global risk appetite.

The relationship is not automatic. Crypto markets also respond to US monetary policy, ETF flows, leverage, and broader liquidity conditions.

However, the risk becomes more significant if the BOJ hikes faster than markets expect. A surprise move could strengthen the yen and increase pressure on leveraged positions across global markets.
