Northern Trust increased third quarter revenue 11% excluding notable items.
The company returned over $1.5 billion to shareholders year to date.
UBS expanded its fund administration mandate with Northern Trust by over 50%.
On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 21, 2026, Northern Trust (NASDAQ:NTRS) reported an 11% revenue increase excluding one-time notable items. Pre-tax income rose 21% year over year as fee growth and net interest income--the profit earned on loans and securities minus funding costs--both expanded. This operating momentum shows how the firm expands profitability without adding proportional overhead. Three key takeaways from management's comments highlight how this strategy creates shareholder value.
Artificial intelligence (AI), which refers to software automation that handles complex tasks, is shifting into a core driver of employee efficiency. By deploying automated workflow agents, Northern Trust allows its wealth advisors to spend less time on routine client memos and more time delivering advisory services.
Our client action plan agents now save relationship managers 2 to 3 hours on every client memo, time they can redirect to clients.
-- Mike O'Grady, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
Asset servicing involves managing fund administration, custody, and trade processing for institutional clients. Northern Trust expands its relationships with global asset managers to capture higher-margin servicing mandates, including an expanded deal with UBS that increases the assets it services for the manager by over 50%.
Subject to regulatory approvals, UBS's Swiss and Luxembourg management companies will extend our mandate to additional funds over the next two-plus years, including administering the former Credit Suisse funds in those markets, increasing UBS assets we service by more than 50%.
-- Mike O'Grady, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
Northern Trust generates capital that supports internal business growth and direct distributions to shareholders. The company maintains capital levels above regulatory minimums, enabling it to fund dividends and share buybacks while preserving balance sheet flexibility.
We returned more than $500 million in the third quarter and more than $1.5 billion year to date.
-- Mike O'Grady, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
Revenue expansion across fee businesses and interest spreads drives positive operating leverage, the rate at which revenue growth exceeds expenses. Northern Trust leverages its wealth platform and international custody scale to maintain margin expansion through disciplined pricing.
Excluding notable items, we expect to deliver positive operating leverage in the fourth quarter and 500 basis points or more of operating leverage for the full year.
-- Dave Fox, Chief Financial Officer
Unifying wealth management, asset servicing, and asset management positions the firm to capture complex institutional mandates and compound long-term earnings.
There's a number of opportunities where we see longer term to utilize this strategic framework that we have in place to both grow but also grow in a scalable, profitable way.
-- Mike O'Grady, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
