TradingKey - Marvell's acquisition of Lumentum remains unconfirmed, but a surge in buying pressure sent Lumentum soaring 15%, briefly breaking above the $1,000 mark.
According to a Reuters report on October 29, chip giant Marvell Technology (MRVL) is evaluating an acquisition of Lumentum (LITE) to deepen its vertical integration capabilities in high-speed optical interconnects and 1.6T/3.2T optical transceiver modules. Reportedly, the deal could be announced as early as next week.
Although neither Marvell nor Lumentum has officially confirmed the potential acquisition, aggressive positioning by speculative capital and quantitative funds drove Lumentum's stock price to surge over 15% during overnight trading, briefly breaking through the $1,000 mark before pulling back to $949.72. Meanwhile, as the buyer, Marvell's stock price took a hit, falling over 10% to temporarily trade at $229.40.

Regarding the potential deal between Marvell Technology and Lumentum, the stark contrast in market sentiment is mainly because Marvell (the acquirer) bears premium costs, issues new shares or consumes cash, and suffers short-term financial dilution. Conversely, Lumentum (the target) incurs no such costs and directly enjoys the M&A premium.
Going forward, investors should pay close attention to statements or disclosures from Marvell's management at upcoming technology symposiums or in regulatory filings (8-K). If the two parties enter exclusive negotiations, it will inject stronger sector revaluation momentum into the optical communications sector.
