Key Points

  • His latest forecast is even more optimistic than the previous one he made.

  • It did, however, include a significant range, suggesting plenty of uncertainty ahead.

Investors expect big things from Space Exploration Technologies Corp (NASDAQ:SPCX), and CEO Elon Musk often pumps up the company's growth prospects, both in the long run and in the short term. Between telecom, artificial intelligence (AI), and space, there is an abundance of growth potential for the business. And that's a key reason many investors don't balk at buying the stock despite its high valuation -- SpaceX has a market cap of around $2 trillion, making it one of the most valuable companies in the world.

While there's no shortage of excitement around its opportunities, Musk's latest forecast for the business stood out for multiple reasons. Not only did it call for $1 trillion in revenue at an earlier time frame than in the past, but the range was also incredibly wide; investors should take it with a grain of salt.

Musk's latest forecast isn't much of a forecast at all

SpaceX reported earnings last week, and much of the focus was on what lies ahead for business. This is, after all, a company whose valuation is more closely tied to future expectations rather than what it has accomplished thus far. With grand ambitions related to space travel, AI, and disrupting the telecom sector, investors are always eager to hear about SpaceX's future.

Previously, Musk said that SpaceX could hit $1 trillion in revenue by 2030. Now, however, Musk has suggested that the business could hit that milestone even earlier, saying on the company's recent earnings call that its annual recurring revenue could get to $1 trillion by the end of next year. But that's the top end of the range. His full range was $500 billion to $1 trillion. It's little wonder that CFO Bret Johnsen reportedly laughed when hearing that outlook, since that doesn't amount to much of a forecast at all.

The broad range is what's troubling, as it implies a great deal of uncertainty, as if Musk threw out the number to suggest it is possible to get there in the near term. But given the significant range, investors shouldn't take it too seriously.

Buying SpaceX stock based on lofty future expectations is risky

While SpaceX has a bright future and a ton of growth potential, investors who buy the stock shouldn't ignore its high valuation. At around $2 trillion in market cap, it might seem like a cheap buy if its revenue does hit $1 trillion within a few years, but a lot would have to go right for that to happen. The company generated $14.6 billion in revenue during its most recent quarter, putting it at an annual run rate of around $58 billion -- nowhere near $1 trillion.

Investing in a stock based on incredibly optimistic growth prospects is dangerous because if the business doesn't execute successfully and hit its targets, the stock could be vulnerable to a significant sell-off.
