Where Will Broadcom Stock Be in 5 Years?

Key Points

  • Revenue growth in its semiconductor solutions segment is in the high-double-digit range.

  • Rising interest rates, as the market has experienced recently, have interrupted industry growth cycles in the past.

  • Such history is a good reason to approach Broadcom stock cautiously.

Attempting to predict the performance of Broadcom (NASDAQ: AVGO) may not be as easy as some assume. Indeed, the unprecedented demand for AI chips led to an approximate 560% gain for its stock over the last five years.

Nonetheless, history shows that uninterrupted increases are rare, and investors may worry about the pace of AI growth. Thus, investors should expect more muted and uneven growth for Broadcom over the next five years. Here's why.

Missed AI’s "Act 1"? Act 2 Could Be 15x Bigger. Most investors think they missed the AI boat because they didn't buy Nvidia in 2005. But according to our analysts, we’re only at the end of "Act 1"—the R&D phase. "Act 2" is the global rollout. Continue »

Optimism and worry about Broadcom's future

From a certain point of view, investors may naturally expect Broadcom's growth to continue. Although market research firms may disagree on the scale of industry expansion, they have forecast industry growth rates between 16% and 33% annually in the coming years.

Broadcom's semiconductor solutions segment far exceeded those predictions, growing 88% year over year in the first half of 2026. Even when including the infrastructure software segment, Broadcom's total revenue of $71 billion increased by 55% over the same period.

Moreover, since the company kept operating expenses in check, net income for the same period was almost $30 billion. That was a 103% rise from year-ago levels and has helped lower the stock's valuation. Broadcom's P/E ratio of 43 may make it appear pricey, but the forward P/E ratio of 29 suggests that the stock price growth has not moved meaningfully ahead of its fundamentals.

However, investors should remember that, just as the internet industry endured the dot-com bust, the same could happen to AI. Unfortunately, investors cannot dismiss the possibility of such an event over the next five years. Interestingly, Broadcom CEO Hock Tan echoes Warren Buffett on some of the "casino-like investing" that has often characterized AI stock investing.

Such attitudes do not appear to apply as directly to Broadcom. Unlike many AI enterprises, it is a profitable company and, as previously mentioned, also has a software division that can mitigate chip industry downturns.

Nonetheless, such a down cycle has followed every previous growth phase in the industry. Furthermore, rising interest rates, as the market has experienced recently, typically contribute to such downturns.

For now, analysts forecast 66% revenue growth for Broadcom this year and 64% in 2027. But since forecasts can change, it is probably wise for investors to be prepared for more challenging conditions.

Moving forward with Broadcom stock

Over the next five years, investors should probably maintain a bullish outlook on Broadcom, but they should not simply expect five years of uninterrupted growth.

Admittedly, Broadcom's chip division is experiencing massive growth, and forecasts for both Broadcom and the AI chip industry generally point to continued optimism.

Although that growth is likely to continue, the history of such booms should urge caution. Just as rising interest rates contributed to the dot-com bust, it is possible that the AI industry could experience a similar sell-off over the next five years.

Such an event probably does not mean AI is dead, but it is a reminder that significant sell-offs usually accompany industry growth stories.

The good news is that Broadcom is an established and profitable company at the center of this industry. That means the chip stock should roll with the punches and remain one of the largest beneficiaries of AI expansion.
