Women's average Social Security benefits are lower than men's across all age groups. This article lays out the specific dollar amounts for retirees between ages 62 and 70.

As of December 2025, the average benefit among women is $1,872.43 per month, while men receive an average of $2,282.28, according to the Social Security Administration (SSA). This results in a monthly gap of $409.85.

Average benefits for women by age

The SSA calculates your benefit using your 35 highest-earning years, which are adjusted for inflation and run through the primary insurance amount (PIA) formula. This formula is the math used to find your basic monthly check. Because the formula is uniform, the differences in these averages reflect the earnings history and claiming choices of the population.

Full retirement age (FRA) ranges from 66 to 67, depending on your birth year, and it's 67 for everyone born in 1960 or later. If you claim before that age, you face an early-claim reduction that can cut your benefit by up to 30%. If you wait until age 70, you earn delayed retirement credits, which increase your checks by 8% per year.

The dollar gap grows as retirees get older. At age 70, men receive an average of $2,529.62 while women receive $2,024.08, a gap of about $505.54 per month. The following table breaks down the average benefit for men and women from ages 62 to 70 as of December 2025, the most recent data available.

agewomen's averagemen's average
62$1,285.50$1,572.83
63$1,300.20$1,580.81
64$1,342.07$1,624.93
65$1,457.40$1,772.00

67$1,801.82$2,234.41
68$1,836.58$2,272.40
69$1,876.96$2,321.96
70$2,024.08$2,529.62

Factors behind the gender gap

The difference in benefits reflects historical gaps in lifetime earnings and years spent in the paid workforce. Women's lower average Social Security checks often have to stretch over more years. According to the SSA, a woman who's 65 today is expected to live about 21 more years, while a man of the same age is expected to live about 18 more years.

A 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) will take effect in 2027. This figure isn't included in the table above, but it will add about $73 per month to the average benefit for a 70-year-old woman.

Social Security was designed to replace only 40% of your pre-retirement income. That share is well short of what most retirees need to cover their costs. Most people rely on savings or other income sources to supplement their benefits.

The picture looks different for some married women

The data above looks at retirement benefits, but many women wind up claiming spousal or survivor benefits on their partner's work records because that's more than the amount they're eligible for on their own.

Spousal benefits are worth up to one-half of the amount your partner qualifies for at their FRA. Your spouse must already be receiving retirement benefits for you to claim a spousal check. Unlike retirement benefits, spousal benefits only continue growing until your FRA, so there's no incentive to delaying longer.

Those who claim a spousal benefit will qualify for a survivor benefit once their partner passes away. This is worth up to 100% of the amount your partner was receiving or eligible for at the time of their death.

Contact the Social Security Administration to learn about how much this would be worth for you and how to apply. You can do this by phone or by scheduling an appointment with your local Social Security office.
