Should you invest in the rebound of global experiences or the resilience of the American home? Deciding between Booking Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:BKNG) and Home Depot Inc. (NYSE:HD) requires weighing different consumer priorities.

Booking operates a dominant global travel platform, while Home Depot serves as the primary hub for home improvement. These companies are compared because they represent two different pillars of consumer discretionary spending, competing for the same limited budget as households choose between a summer vacation or a kitchen remodel.

The case for Booking Holding

Booking manages a portfolio of major brands including Booking.com, Priceline, Agoda, Kayak, and OpenTable. The company facilitates travel and restaurant reservations across more than 220 countries and territories, operating extensively in the travel and tourism sector. Its growth strategy recently included the acquisition of Getaroom, though a planned expansion into ETraveli was halted by European regulators who blocked the deal on antitrust grounds.

In FY 2025, Booking reported revenue of about $26.9 billion, representing a growth rate of approximately 13.4% compared to the prior year. The company generated a net income of roughly $5.4 billion during this period. While revenue grew steadily, the net margin of 20.1% was slightly lower than the 24.8% reported in the previous fiscal year.

As of its December 2025 balance sheet, the company maintained a current ratio of roughly 1.3x. This ratio measures a firm's ability to cover its short-term debts with its short-term assets. The company has a debt-to-equity ratio of negative 3.5x, meaning its total liabilities exceed its shareholders' equity. It also produced approximately $9.1 billion in free cash flow, which is the cash remaining after paying for operating costs and capital investments.

The case for Home Depot

Home Depot operates as the world's largest home improvement retailer, serving both do-it-yourself (DIY) homeowners and professional contractors. In its latest annual report, filed for the period ending in early 2026, the company detailed its network of 2,359 stores across North America. It has recently expanded its reach among professional tradespeople through the acquisitions of SRS and GMS, aiming to capture more of the complex building materials market.

In FY 2025, revenue reached about $164.7 billion, which was an increase of roughly 3% over the prior year. The company recorded a net income of approximately $14.2 billion during this fiscal year. The net margin for the period was around 8.6%, reflecting a slight decline from the 9.3% net margin seen in the previous year.

As of its February 2026 balance sheet, its current ratio was approximately 1.1x. The company reported a debt-to-equity ratio of roughly 5.1x, which uses total debt to measure how much of the business is financed by creditors versus shareholders. Home Depot generated about $12.6 billion in free cash flow, providing significant capital to reinvest in its store network and digital infrastructure.

Risk profile comparison

Booking faces intense competition from global technology companies and AI-native platforms like Airbnb Inc. (NASDAQ:ABNB). The business remains sensitive to geopolitical volatility and shifts in consumer discretionary spending. Regulatory pressures are also a concern, specifically regarding the European Union Digital Markets Act, where the company is designated as a gatekeeper.

Home Depot's performance is closely tied to the housing market and interest rates, which can impact home improvement spending. The company faces stiff competition from online marketplaces and specialty supply houses. Operational risks include potential supply chain disruptions and a class action lawsuit regarding the use of AI-powered license plate readers in store parking lots.

Valuation comparison

Booking currently trades at a lower multiple of future earnings estimates, while Home Depot offers a lower entry point relative to its total sales over the past twelve months.

Which stock would I buy in 2026?

Home Depot and its big-box store competitor Lowes Companies Inc. (NYSE:LOW) have essentially created a duopoly in home improvement sales, although regional and local specialists in lumber, kitchen, bath, and outdoor continue to occupy a sizable niche in the marketplace. Home Depot is constantly looking for an edge to both grow sales and expand profits, given how much of its offerings are commoditized by the other.

For Home Depot, growth is sought in two ways. The business recently acquired Mingledorff's, a leading wholesale distributor of HVAC products, giving Home Depot a larger foothold in HVAC. At the store level, Home Depot is granting stores greater authority to offer more customization to better engage customers and build loyalty. Is it working? A bit: analysts see the chain increasing sales by close to 4% and net income by a little over 1% in fiscal 2026. With the industry under pressure from inflation and consumer spending cuts, management sees its emphasis on same-day and next-day delivery as a key differentiator.

Booking, meanwhile, is successfully shifting from an agency model to a primarily merchant model. That means it used to make its money as an agent--connecting travelers to a hotel and collecting a commission while the hotel manages collecting payment from the traveler. In the merchant model, Booking "buys" capacity from hotels and other providers on its platform and collects payment directly from the traveler. This tends to lead to fatter margins.

The company is also in excellent financial shape. It has $16 billion in cash, which makes its balance sheet investment grade. A plus for shareholders, the company has a $20 billion share buyback program. The brand is increasingly a destination for travelers, which means it is paying less to companies like Google for search engine visibility. Today, two-thirds of Booking.com's visitors are "organic," meaning they are direct visitors, not from paid ad traffic.

Revenue will grow about 9% this year to $29.3 billion. But net income takes a healthier 50% leap to about $8.1 billion.

Which stock to buy? With the economy negatively affecting most Americans, it's difficult to predict whether travel or home improvement will benefit more over the next 12 months. But long-term, Booking presents a much more attractive buy based on its cheaper forward P/E ratio. It's the stock to buy in 2026.
