Robinhood Could Be Ready to Launch Single-Stock Perpetual Futures. Here's Why That's Bullish for HOOD Stock.

  • Robinhood launched cryptocurrency perpetual futures earlier this year.

  • Expanding into single-stock perps could further broaden its market.

Robinhood (NASDAQ: HOOD) hasn't announced any plans to launch single-stock perpetual futures on its platform yet, but there seems to be a lot of pent-up demand for them. In a recent Mizuho (NYSE: MFG) survey of over 600 active Robinhood users, 94% of respondents were willing to trade single-stock perpetual futures if they became available. Let's see why that could be bullish for Robinhood's stock -- which has declined nearly 30% over the past 12 months.

What are single-stock perpetual futures?

In traditional investing, investors can buy options to either buy a stock (a call) or sell it (a put) at a fixed strike price with a set expiration date. As an option approaches its expiration date, its value declines because there is less time remaining for the stock to make a major move.

Single-stock perpetual futures are similar to calls and puts, but they don't have strike prices or expiration dates. Instead, an investor simply takes a bullish or bearish position in a stock, deposits cash as collateral, and chooses a leverage ratio that multiplies their gains or losses.

For example, depositing $200 at 5x leverage gives you $1,000 of exposure to an underlying stock. If that stock starts trading at $100 and rises by $10, your $1,000 position grows to $1,100 -- giving you a $100 profit on your $200 deposit. If it drops 10% to $90, it shrinks to $900 -- resulting in a $100 loss. If the stock drops near $80, the platform automatically liquidates the entire position before it consumes your entire $200 deposit.

To keep the contract's price tethered to the actual stock price without fixed strike prices or expiration dates, the buyers and sellers pay each other small funding fees. When buyers push the contract's price above the actual stock, the longs pay the shorts a periodic fee; when selling pressure pushes it lower, the shorts pay the longs a periodic fee.

Why could this be bullish for Robinhood?

Robinhood already launched perpetual futures for cryptocurrencies in the U.S. and Europe this year, so it seems like a natural move to launch them for individual stocks as well. It would also complement its forward-thinking strategy of entering new markets -- including tokenized real-world assets (RWAs) and prediction markets -- before traditional brokerages.

Robinhood's stock slumped over the past year as rising interest rates and Treasury yields curbed the market's appetite for riskier investments. But many of its funded customers -- which grew 7% year over year to 28.4 million in the second quarter of 2026 -- could still be interested in using single-stock perpetual futures to trade some more volatile stocks with less capital. Therefore, expanding into that nascent market could be a bullish sign for Robinhood's stock.
