Autoliv: 3 Key Takeaways for Long-Term Investors

Source Motley_fool

Key Points

  • Autoliv sales to Chinese vehicle makers outperformed production by 20 percentage points.

  • Management narrowed full-year adjusted operating margin guidance to around 10.5%.

  • Autoliv repurchased over 1.2 million shares for $150 million in Q3.

On its Q3 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 23, 2026, Autoliv (NYSE:ALV) narrowed its full-year guidance for adjusted operating margin (profitability excluding one-off restructuring costs) to around 10.5%.

Vehicle suppliers face regional production drops and higher raw material costs. Expanding market share and controlling internal expenses are vital for protecting the Swedish company's long-term capital returns. Three takeaways from the management outline how Autoliv is navigating this environment.

1. Chinese Automaker Growth Offsets Broader Production Declines

Global light vehicle production, or total vehicle manufacturing, fell nearly 2% during the quarter. Autoliv expanded its market share in Asia by growing alongside Chinese original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), or vehicle manufacturers, which now account for 58% of Autoliv's Chinese sales.

In China, we once again outperformed light vehicle production driven by strong growth with Chinese OEMs. where our sales outperformed by almost 20 percentage points.
-- Mikael Bratt, President and Chief Executive Officer

2. Internal Efficiency Offsets Massive Raw Material Headwinds

Management confronted unexpected cost increases of nearly 2 percentage points from tariffs, logistics, and raw materials such as metals and oil. Severe spending controls and plant automation offset nearly all of those external cost surges.

The net impact [of higher raw material costs] on our full year adjusted operating margin is expected to be limited, demonstrating the resilience of our business model and our ability to proactively manage a challenging cost environment.
-- Mikael Bratt, President and Chief Executive Officer

3. Record Product Launch Cadence Positions Company for Future Revenue

New vehicle safety installations are accelerating as automakers adopt advanced occupant protection systems like front center airbags. Higher launch volumes in late 2026 set up another record-setting year of new Autoliv product rollouts in 2027.

We expect a substantially higher number of launches in the fourth quarter compared with the same period last year, making 2026 a record year in terms of launch activity.
-- Mikael Bratt, President and Chief Executive Officer

Looking Ahead

Sequential profit growth is picking up in the final quarter, and management celebrated its satisfaction with operating momentum. Higher factory production volumes, recovered customer inflation costs, and rising engineering income give Autoliv a firm operational footing.

Global scale and deep integration with emerging Asian manufacturers provide key structural advantages as trade barriers evolve. Management remains focused on commercial pricing discipline, factory automation, and capital allocation priorities like share buybacks.

Maintaining long-term profitability targets requires navigating choppy vehicle production cycles without sacrificing structural margins.

So our earnings growth is something we are working on very hard with the different levers that we have identified and communicated before.
-- Mikael Bratt, President and Chief Executive Officer
