On its third quarter of 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 22, 2026, American Airlines (NASDAQ:AAL) announced third-quarter revenue grew 19.3% year over year to $16.3 billion. Higher fuel expenses created short-term margin pressure, but expanding premium seating and cost efficiencies position the business for long-term profit growth. Three key takeaways from management explain how the strategy is unfolding.

1. High Fuel Expenses Decelerate Capacity Growth

Fuel expenses jumped $1.9 billion year over year, dragging bottom-line performance into a loss despite record top-line revenue. To protect long-term margins, management is slowing capacity growth by lowering aircraft utilization, which measures how many hours planes fly daily.

And given today's elevated fuel prices, we now expect our growth rate in 2027 to decelerate considerably.
-- Robert D. Isom Jr., Chief Executive Officer

2. Premium Product Investments Drive Margin Expansion

Higher-yielding premium seats produce superior returns while requiring less flight capacity. Management is retrofitting more than 200 aircraft to add premium seating, which helped boost managed corporate revenue, or ticket sales from business travel contracts, by 28% year over year.

Premium generates roughly half of our ticket revenue on only about 30% of seats. And we are adding more premium seats with every new aircraft in retrofit.
-- Robert D. Isom Jr., Chief Executive Officer

3. Structural Efficiency Savings Offset Cost Pressures

Cost discipline is essential as jet fuel prices remain elevated. Through process improvements and technology investments, management kept CASMx, which measures operating expenses per available seat mile excluding fuel, within expected guidance.

By the end of this year, we expect to have achieved nearly $1 billion in annual run rate savings and more than $900 million in working capital improvements through these efforts.
-- Devon May, Chief Financial Officer

Looking Ahead

Unit revenue, or average revenue generated per seat mile flown, is trending upward across all routes, giving management clear momentum. Hub investments at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport and expanded partnerships strengthen the carrier's network. Management is watching fuel price stabilization and yield management, or average fares paid per passenger.

Total unit revenue increased 14.5% year over year with strength across every geography and every cabin.
-- Nathaniel Pieper, Chief Commercial Officer

Commercial progress and cost discipline lay the groundwork for debt reduction and future free cash flow once fuel prices stabilize.

Our focus now is on translating the commercial progress we are seeing into stronger margins and improved profitability.
-- Robert D. Isom Jr., Chief Executive Officer
