On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 20, 2026, Western Alliance (NYSE:WAL) announced a major reduction in its higher-cost deposit balances. This strategic shift expands net interest margin, which measures the spread between interest earned on loans and paid on deposits, while improving balance sheet durability.

Management highlighted three key takeaways for the path forward.

1. Shifting Higher-Cost Deposits Restructures Funding Costs

Western Alliance completed $4.5 billion of deposit remixing over two quarters to reduce expensive funding. The move lowered deposit expenses and expanded net interest margin, which measures lending profitability relative to funding costs.

During the quarter, we transitioned $3 billion of higher cost ECR related deposits while keeping total deposits essentially flat compared with the prior quarter.
-- Kenneth A. Vecchione, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer

2. Lowering Nonaccrual Loans Improves Balance Sheet Quality

Asset quality improved as problem loans dropped sharply across the portfolio. Nonaccrual loans, which are nonperforming loans where interest collection is uncertain, fell as management resolved troubled credits.

Nonaccrual loans declined 14% or $77 million from the prior quarter to $485 million exceeding the expectations outlined in our guidance update last month.
-- Kenneth A. Vecchione, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer

3. Repurchasing Shares Returns Excess Capital to Shareholders

Slower balance sheet expansion generated surplus capital for management to allocate toward buybacks. The bank bought back roughly 1% of its outstanding shares during the third quarter at price levels it considered attractive.

According to Kenneth A. Vecchione, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer, “In Q3, we repurchased shares of $92 million against our $150 million target for the second half of 2026, representing approximately 1.15 million shares or roughly 1% of shares outstanding.”

Looking Ahead

Commercial banking deposit growth is building momentum across specialized channels, supporting lower structural funding costs. Specialized verticals like homeowner association accounts and corporate trust services provide low-cost funding that protects profitability.

Strong momentum in commercial banking deposits combined with encouraging growth from our newer deposit verticals continues to support a lower cost and more durable funding base.
-- Kenneth A. Vecchione, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer

Management is balancing capital distribution with credit rating objectives to expand commercial deposit relationships. Discipline around loan growth creates flexibility to reward investors while keeping capital levels strong.

Given our current valuation, we continue to view share repurchases as an attractive and disciplined use of capital.
-- Kenneth A. Vecchione, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer
