On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 21, 2026, Alaska Air (NYSE:ALK) announced that higher fuel costs will add $1.8 billion in expense this year. Long-term investors need to evaluate how the business offsets volatile commodity costs through higher-margin revenue streams. Management cut full-year 2026 adjusted loss guidance to $5.00–$5.50 per share. Fourth-quarter guidance called for an adjusted loss of ($2.50) to ($2.00) per share.

Three things management said stand out.

1. Diversified Revenues Represent More Than Half the Business Mix

Operating revenue outside the main cabin (premium tickets, loyalty fees, cargo, etc.) provides the business with insulation against volatile jet fuel prices. Higher contributions from loyalty programs and freight reduce earnings swings over time.

Diversified revenues now represent 54% of our total mix, up 4 points from last year and 1 point from last quarter. As this mix continues to grow, our earnings will become less dependent on fuel, and more resilient.
-- Benito Minicucci, Chief Executive Officer

2. Premium Seating Expansion Drives Unit Revenue Gains Across the Network

First-class and premium seating upgrades attract higher-paying travelers across West Coast routes. Completing cabin retrofits allows the carrier to capture additional yield from high-margin passengers.

Premium traffic remained 1 of our strongest revenue performers, growing approximately 24.5% year over year and reaching more than 36% of total revenue.
-- Andrew R. Harrison, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer

3. Balance Sheet Repair Remains the Top Priority for Free Cash Flow

Leverage management remains critical as jet fuel prices create short-term cost pressure. Paying down debt takes precedence once operations generate net cash proceeds.

Debt-to-capitalization remained stable at 66%, and as we improve earnings and generate free cash flow, restoring the balance sheet will be our top financial priority.
-- Shane R. Tackett, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

Looking Ahead

Travel demand holds firm across primary markets, and executive teams are executing on core strategic growth pillars. The airline maintains strong distribution scale along the West Coast while expanding long-haul flight routes out of Seattle. Management is watching fuel price shifts and pricing discipline across key flight corridors.

Demand remains healthy. Revenue performed in line with our expectations.
-- Benito Minicucci, Chief Executive Officer

Structural advantages in cargo capacity and premium cabin seating should help drive baseline operational improvements regardless of energy market swings.

And regardless of fuel, we are confident in at least $3 to $4 of core earnings improvement next year.
-- Shane R. Tackett, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
