AT&T added over 1 million advanced connectivity subscribers in the quarter.
Annual fiber capital investment will drop by $1 billion through 2028.
Legacy copper services were eliminated from more than 100 wire centers.
On its third quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 21, 2026, AT&T (NYSE:T) announced that it added more than 1 million subscribers across its high-speed fiber internet and mobile phone services. This milestone demonstrates that combining mobile and home broadband plans helps lower churn, which is the rate at which subscribers cancel service. Three things management said stand out.
Building out fiber optic internet, which uses glass strands to transmit data at high speeds, is becoming cheaper per home as construction scales up. Lower capital expenditures, or spending on physical infrastructure, allow the company to protect cash flow while expanding coverage.
We believe this positions us to reach 60 million+ locations with fiber by the end of the decade, with annual capital investment that is roughly $1 billion lower than we previously planned.
-- Pascal Desroches, Chief Financial Officer
Combining mobile service with home internet creates converged accounts that are far less likely to switch to competitors. The company's dense metro fiber networks and 5G wireless holdings, which represent fifth-generation mobile technology, create an operational barrier that rivals can't easily match.
In the dense, urban and suburban areas where we deploy both fiber and 5G infrastructure at scale, we believe that our competitors cannot and will not match our operating proficiency, network performance, or exceptional converged value proposition.
-- John Stankey, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
Retiring legacy copper wiring reduces unnecessary upkeep costs and streamlines operations across central telephone switching facilities, known as wire centers. Phasing out older technology helps the business move toward its target of $4 billion in annual savings.
Our progress here is picking up momentum, and we now have more than 100 wire centers with no customers supported by legacy services.
-- John Stankey, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
Subscriber growth across wireless and high-speed internet networks continues to fuel operating leverage, which measures how revenue growth translates into operating profit. Management is focusing on pricing discipline, debt reduction, and customer acquisition costs while leveraging structural advantages in fiber footprint and spectrum holdings.
We exited the third quarter with great operating momentum, and we continue to expect full-year Advanced Connectivity service revenue growth of 5%+ and EBITDA growth of 6%+.
-- Pascal Desroches, Chief Financial Officer
Long-term success depends on converting early fiber installations into lasting, multiproduct relationships. As artificial intelligence, or AI, applications increase data demands across home and enterprise connections, the company aims to capitalize on its high-capacity infrastructure.
This asset base puts us in a leading position to serve converged consumer and business customers today and well into the future, as AI becomes a key driver of their connectivity needs and requires ever-improving high-performance networking.
-- John Stankey, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
