On its third quarter of 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 21, 2026, Westinghouse Air Brake Technologies (NYSE:WAB) raised its full-year adjusted earnings per share guidance to $10.85 to $11.05 per share. Expanding operating margins and multiyear backlog growth give the equipment manufacturer clear visibility into long-term cash flow. Of concern was that revenue reached $3.12 billion, below the $3.2 billion consensus estimate, while full-year revenue guidance remained unchanged. Management also said some locomotive deliveries slipped into Q4 and that tariffs were the year's biggest headwind.

Three takeaways from the call stand out for long-term investors.

1. Internal Efficiency Programs Are Driving Structural Margin Expansion

Operational execution, cost management, and efficiency initiatives like Integration 3.0, the company's internal restructuring and cost-reduction program, pushed adjusted operating margin up nearly 2 percentage points to 23%. By shedding low-margin assets and trimming complexity, management expects these cost reductions to sustainably elevate profitability.

The better than expected margin performance included favorable product mix, strong operational execution, including productivity benefits from Integration 3.0 and other efficiency initiatives, as well as lower operating expenses as a percent of revenue resulting from disciplined cost management.
-- John Olin, Chief Financial Officer

2. Multiyear Backlog Provides Unprecedented Long-Term Revenue Visibility

Long lead times for new locomotives require orders to be placed 24 to 36 months in advance. Multiyear backlog jumped 23%, surpassing $31 billion. That gives management its strongest order coverage in company history, protecting future cash flows.

Backlog remains a key strength. Twelve-month backlog was up 8.8% from the prior year, while the multi-year backlog exceeded $31 billion, up 22.9%. These results demonstrate sustained revenue and earnings momentum and provide enhanced visibility for the fourth quarter and into the future.
-- Rafael Santana, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

3. Global Expansion Accelerates Recurring Revenue Outside North America

International demand remains a powerful growth vector for the locomotive builder. The company closed $1 billion in international locomotive and service deals across Africa and Brazil. These orders expand its global installed base of equipment and secure lucrative long-term master service agreements, contracts that guarantee ongoing service revenue.

During the quarter, we secured $1 billion of locomotive and service orders, which included significant awards in Africa and in Brazil. These wins further expand our global installed base, strengthen our long-term customer partnerships, and create opportunities for attractive recurring revenues over time.
-- Rafael Santana, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

Looking Ahead

Quarterly momentum is building across both freight and transit markets, and management isn't hiding its satisfaction after boosting full-year profit expectations. Structural advantages in high-tonnage mining locomotives and ultra-class haul trucks, proprietary digital signaling software, and automated braking systems keep customer switching costs high. Management is watching fleet renewal timing among Class I railroads, large North American freight rail operators. It also maintains tight pricing discipline across its global supply chain.

As we look at the fourth quarter, in light of our third quarter results and our ongoing underlying momentum, we are raising our full year adjusted EPS guidance. We now expect adjusted EPS to be in the range of $10.85-$11.05, up 22% at the midpoint.
-- Rafael Santana, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

Order coverage extending for up to three years provides a durable foundation. The equipment manufacturer can navigate short-term market swings in North American railcar builds while expanding its international presence.

With a talented global team, strong customer relationships, and a clear strategy for growth, we are well positioned to deliver profitable growth and continue to compound shareholder value over time.
-- Rafael Santana, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
