United Airlines upsized its revolving credit facility from $3 billion to $5 billion.
The airline recaptured 72% of increased quarterly fuel expenses.
Co-brand card portfolio spending increased 13% year over year.
On its third quarter of 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 21, 2026, United Airlines (NASDAQ:UAL) announced third-quarter earnings per share of $2.54. Higher fuel expenses tested airline profitability across the industry, but investments in customer service and pricing discipline helped protect operating margins. Three things management said stand out.
United Airlines is installing Starlink, a high-speed satellite Wi-Fi service owned by Space Exploration Technologies, across its aircraft fleet to attract high-value passengers from competitors. Management expects this technology edge to increase unit revenue, or revenue earned per seat mile flown, as more travelers switch carriers.
It is hard to get brand-loyal customers to switch airlines. And while it is mostly anecdotal, we are seeing two important things happen. One, customers who are brand-loyal to other airlines and have flown them for years switched to a United flight solely because of Starlink. And two, once they try us, they stick with us.
-- J. Scott Kirby, Chief Executive Officer
Jet fuel prices spiked near the end of the quarter and raised total operating expenses for the carrier. United Airlines raised ticket yields, or average fare paid per mile, to recover nearly three-quarters of that cost increase while maintaining demand.
Our ability to pass on higher fuel costs through higher ticket prices is stronger than ever before and demonstrates how much United and the industry has transformed.
-- Michael Leskinen, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
The company expanded its revolving credit facility, an unfunded bank loan line, from $3 billion to $5 billion while extending its maturity to 2031. Management plans to pay down gross debt by a matching amount to save $70 million in annual interest fees.
This is currently the largest airline revolving credit facility in history, and yet another proof point of the strength of our business and our balance sheet. Rising oil prices have impacted our near term metrics. With our net leverage at 2.4 turns, however, we remain determined to achieve investment grade metrics and hopefully also ratings next year.
-- Michael Leskinen, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
Passenger demand holds firm across cabin classes, and operational momentum continues to build. Expanded airport hubs in Houston and Washington Dulles provide structural growth advantages alongside network retrofits.
We are making significant investments across our hub network, including at Washington Dulles, where we are also advancing a major airport transformation and expect to open a new concourse with 14 additional gates next month. Together, these investments reflect our continued execution of our strategy to build a stronger airline positioned for long-term profitable growth.
-- Brett J. Hart, President
Leadership is monitoring fleet deliveries and capacity discipline. Long-term strategy centers on expanding profit margins above market cycles.
While our relative margin has been industry leading, we remain focused on achieving absolute double digit pre-tax margins as our top financial goal.
-- Michael Leskinen, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
