As the digital advertising market evolves, investors are weighing the explosive growth of AppLovin (NASDAQ:APP) against the social commerce potential of Pinterest (NYSE:PINS). Which stock is the better buy?

AppLovin provides the behind-the-scenes software that helps mobile apps grow and make money, while Pinterest is a visual discovery engine where users plan their future purchases. Both companies thrive on advertiser spending, but they offer very different risk and reward profiles for investors looking to capitalize on the next wave of ad-tech innovation.

The case for AppLovin

AppLovin provides software tools for mobile app developers and recently divested its internal apps business to focus on advertising technology. Its platform uses AI-driven bidding to help clients like Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) reach users across global mobile games. Many of its clients are also competitors, which creates a complex relationship dynamic and means revenue can be sensitive to industry shifts.

In FY 2025, revenue reached nearly $5.5 billion, marking a significant 70% increase over the previous year. This growth helped the company achieve net income of approximately $3.3 billion, which represents a net margin of 60.8%. This is a strong improvement from the 49% net margin recorded in the prior fiscal year, reflecting higher profitability at scale.

As of its December 2025 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio was 1.7x, meaning total debt is 1.7 times the value of shareholder equity. The current ratio, which measures the ability to pay short-term debts with current assets, was healthy at 3.3x. Free cash flow, calculated as operating cash flow minus capital expenditures, reached close to $3.9 billion for the fiscal year.

The case for Pinterest

Pinterest operates a visual discovery platform where over 619 million monthly active users find inspiration for shopping and DIY projects. It makes money primarily through advertising, particularly in the retail and consumer packaged goods sectors. The company has focused on making its pins more shoppable to better compete among tech stocks that bridge social media and commerce.

In FY 2025, revenue grew to approximately $4.2 billion, representing an increase of nearly 15.8% year over year. The company reported net income of roughly $416.9 million for the period, resulting in a net margin of 9.9%. While the company is profitable, its net margin is lower than its peer in this comparison as it continues to invest in platform updates.

Pinterest maintains a very conservative balance sheet as of its December 2025 reporting, with a debt-to-equity ratio of just 0.1x. The current ratio, measuring short-term liquidity, was exceptionally high at 7.6x, indicating a large cushion of assets to cover near-term obligations. However, stock-based compensation represented roughly 68.6% of operating cash flow, which inflates reported cash generation since SBC is a non-cash expense added back in the cash flow statement.

Risk profile comparison

AppLovin faces risks from third-party mobile platforms like Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Alphabet, which control privacy policies that can limit data availability for ad targeting. The company is also dealing with several securities class action lawsuits and a legal challenge regarding the distribution of inappropriate ads to children. Intense competition from large rivals, including Amazon and Unity Software (NYSE:U), further complicates its market position.

Pinterest depends heavily on its ability to keep users engaged, as its revenue is tied to the size and activity of its user base. The company is vulnerable to changes in search engine algorithms and mobile operating system policies that restrict how it tracks user behavior. It also relies on Amazon for its cloud infrastructure and faces ongoing regulatory scrutiny regarding data privacy and content moderation for younger users.

Valuation comparison

Pinterest carries a lower P/S ratio, reflecting sales over the past twelve months, while AppLovin trades at a higher Forward P/E based on future earnings estimates.

Which stock would I buy in 2026?

I'd go with AppLovin. Its AI-powered platform is delivering the results that advertisers want, and they keep coming back for more. In Q2 2026, revenue grew more than 50% year over year and the underlying profitability was exceptional, though revenue came in slightly below analyst expectations and the stock fell sharply after the report, a reminder that expectations for this company run very high.

Pinterest is interesting to me as a long-term story. It reaches 640 million monthly users who come specifically to discover and shop for unique goods, which gives advertisers something valuable: intent. Revenue grew 18% in Q2 2026 and AI is improving how ads perform on the platform. The opportunity in social commerce with this company can't be dismissed.

The honest challenge with Pinterest is that converting that engaged audience into consistent profits has taken longer than investors expected. The company is still posting GAAP net losses while AppLovin generates substantial free cash flow. For me, owning the platform already delivering on its promise feels like the stronger starting point.
