Will the high-flying growth of a business-to-business advertising platform outshine the massive social reach of a consumer favorite? Investors must decide between AppLovin (NASDAQ:APP) and Snap (NYSE:SNAP) for 2026.

AppLovin provides the back-end technology that helps mobile apps find users and make money. Snap operates the popular Snapchat app, focusing on direct consumer engagement and brand advertising. While both companies rely on digital ad spending, they operate at different ends of the communication services landscape, offering distinct risk and reward profiles.

The case for AppLovin

AppLovin provides an AI-powered marketing platform that helps businesses reach and monetize audiences through mobile apps and connected TV. In its latest annual report filed for the period ending December 31, 2024, the company noted it serves a global network of app developers and e-commerce advertisers. Following the sale of its internal apps business in mid-2025, the company now focuses entirely on its position among tech stocks focused on advertising.

In FY 2025, revenue reached nearly $5.5 billion, representing a significant 70% increase compared to the prior year. The company reported net income of approximately $3.3 billion for the same period, which resulted in a strong net margin of 60.8%. This marked a sharp rise from the $1.6 billion in net income recorded in fiscal year 2024, highlighting a rapid expansion in profitability.

As of its December 2025 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio was roughly 1.7x, which represents total debt divided by shareholder equity. The current ratio, which compares short-term assets to liabilities, is approximately 3.3x. Free cash flow for the period reached nearly $3.9 billion, showing the company's ability to generate significant cash from its software operations.

The case for Snap

Snap operates the Snapchat platform, which serves nearly 971 million monthly active users primarily between the ages of 18 and 34. The company generates revenue by selling advertising to brands ranging from small businesses to global corporations across North America and international regions. It also earns non-advertising revenue through its Snapchat+ subscription service, providing a growing secondary revenue stream for the social media giant.

During FY 2025, revenue reached close to $5.9 billion, a 10.6% increase over the previous fiscal year. While the company is still working toward consistent profitability, it reported a net loss of approximately $460.5 million, which reflects a net margin of -7.8%. This performance represents a narrowing of losses compared to the $697.9 million net loss seen in FY 2024, as the company manages its operating costs.

According to its December 2025 balance sheet, Snap maintains a current ratio of roughly 3.6x. Its debt-to-equity ratio is approximately 2.1x, indicating that total debt is 2.1 times the value of shareholder equity. Free cash flow for the period was nearly $437.2 million, though you should note that stock-based compensation represented roughly 155% of operating cash flow, meaning reported cash generation is heavily inflated by this non-cash add-back.

Risk profile comparison

AppLovin faces risks from ongoing securities fraud class action lawsuits alleging misstatements about its AI business model. It also relies heavily on the privacy policies of Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL). Furthermore, the company deals with litigation regarding data collection in games and concentrated voting power among its leadership through its multi-class stock structure.

Snap deals with legal challenges regarding platform addiction for minors and youth safety concerns. The company faces intense competition for user attention from rivals like Pinterest (NYSE:PINS) and Reddit (NYSE:RDDT). It also depends on Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) for infrastructure and remains vulnerable to advertising tracking changes made by other mobile platform providers like Alphabet.

Valuation comparison

Snap has a much lower valuation when measured against its total sales over the past twelve months.

Which stock would I buy in 2026?

I'd go with AppLovin, and it's not close. Its AI-powered ad platform connects mobile app advertisers with users so precisely that advertisers keep increasing their budgets on the platform quarter after quarter. In Q2 2026, revenue grew more than 50% year over year and net income grew even faster. The top line came in slightly below what analysts expected, causing some stock volatility, but the underlying profitability and free cash flow generation remain extraordinary.

Snap reached nearly 1 billion monthly users in Q2 2026, beat analyst expectations, and delivered a dramatic improvement in adjusted EBITDA. Advertisers are increasingly willing to pay for access to its engaged audience. Things aren't perfect, though. Despite all that progress, the company is still posting GAAP net losses, and converting its massive reach into consistent bottom-line profitability remains the central challenge.

The gap between these two businesses is significant right now. AppLovin is compounding at a remarkable rate while Snap is still working toward sustained profitability. Investors will get a fresh update when both companies report Q3 2026 results in early November.
