Is it better to bet on a domestic turnaround or a high-growth international e-commerce leader? Choosing between Advance Auto Parts (NYSE:AAP) and Coupang (NYSE:CPNG) requires weighing different risk and reward profiles.

Advance Auto Parts specializes in the automotive aftermarket, selling components to both professional mechanics and hobbyists. Coupang operates a massive logistics and retail network in Asia, often described as the Amazon of South Korea. Investors are comparing them to see if a value-priced domestic retailer or an expanding global tech giant fits their strategy better.

The case for Advance Auto Parts

Advance Auto Parts operates as a prominent name among retail stocks, specializing in the automotive aftermarket. It sells parts and components to both professional installers and do-it-yourself retail customers. The company manages over 4,300 stores and serves 809 independently owned Carquest locations across North America.

In FY 2025, revenue reached nearly $8.6 billion, which was a decline of roughly 5.4% from the prior year. Net income reached approximately $44.0 million, yielding a net margin of close to 0.5%. These figures indicate a stabilization for the company after it experienced significant losses in the preceding year.

As of its January 2026 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio was nearly 2.4x, which compares total debt to the value of shareholder ownership. The current ratio, which measures the ability to cover short-term debts with current assets, was roughly 1.7x. Free cash flow was negative, reaching nearly $298.0 million, which represents the cash remaining after a company pays for its operations and capital equipment.

The case for Coupang

Coupang operates an extensive logistics and e-commerce network primarily serving the markets in South Korea and Taiwan. Its WOW membership program bundles retail delivery with food delivery and streaming video to drive customer loyalty. The company is also expanding into the global luxury market through its recent acquisition of Farfetch.

In FY 2025, revenue reached nearly $34.5 billion, representing an increase of approximately 14.1% over the previous year. Net income was close to $208.0 million, resulting in a net margin of roughly 0.6%. This reflects steady growth in active customers, which reached approximately 24.7 million by the end of the year.

As of its December 2025 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio was approximately 1.0x, which shows the balance between debt and shareholder equity. The current ratio was nearly 1.0x, indicating that current assets just cover short-term liabilities. Free cash flow was close to $522.0 million, though stock-based compensation represented roughly 26.8% of operating cash flow, which inflates reported cash generation since SBC is a non-cash expense added back in the cash flow statement.

Risk profile comparison

Advance Auto Parts faces significant operational risks from its 2024 restructuring plan, which involved widespread store closures and facility consolidations. It competes intensely with national automotive retailers like AutoZone (NYSE:AZO) and various online sellers. The company also remains susceptible to geopolitical trade tariffs and logistics disruptions that impact its global supply chain.

Coupang must manage significant regulatory scrutiny in South Korea regarding its data privacy practices and search ranking algorithms. It faces intense competition from global e-commerce leaders like Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) as it integrates new business segments. Additionally, the company is vulnerable to geopolitical instability on the Korean peninsula and the risk of cyberattacks on its customer databases.

Valuation comparison

Advance Auto Parts looks cheaper based on its P/S ratio, while Coupang trades at a higher Forward P/E due to its expansion. The Forward P/E compares a stock price to future earnings estimates, and the P/S ratio measures the price against sales over the past twelve months.

Which stock would I buy in 2026?

Neither of these is an easy pick right now, and I want to say that upfront. But if I had to choose, I'd go with Advance Auto Parts.

The turnaround at Advance is in progress, but it's also fragile. In Q2 2026, adjusted earnings beat estimates by a wide margin, free cash flow turned positive for the first time in two years, and margins expanded meaningfully. The stock still dropped roughly 20% after the report because revenue missed and the recovery depends heavily on execution still ahead. This looks like a business working its way back, not one that has already arrived.

Coupang's challenges feel harder to plan around. A record regulatory fine, ongoing perjury investigations, and shareholder lawsuits have weighed heavily on the stock, and the timeline to resolution remains uncertain. The core delivery business is strong, but that overhang is significant.

Between a domestic turnaround with visible progress and an international growth story clouded by serious regulatory risk, Advance Auto Parts is the more manageable bet for me right now.
