SpaceX Becomes Harvard’s Largest Single Stock Holding: Here Are Other Institutional Investors

Source Tradingkey

TradingKey - SpaceX (SPCX)'s record-breaking initial public offering has brought substantial returns to U.S. university endowments and large institutional investors.

Harvard Management Company (HMC), Harvard University's investment arm, recently disclosed that as of June 30, 2026, it held approximately 12.94 million shares of SpaceX stock with a reported market value of about $2.2 billion. This makes SpaceX the single largest holding in Harvard's $4.26 billion disclosed U.S. equity portfolio, accounting for more than half of the total.

Harvard Investment Arm Announces $2.2 Billion SpaceX Stake

Harvard Management Company was founded in 1974 to manage Harvard University's endowment and related assets. As of June 2025, its assets under management stood at approximately $57 billion.

According to the latest 13F filing, SpaceX holdings account for approximately 52% of Harvard's $4.26 billion U.S. stock portfolio. TSMC is Harvard's second-largest disclosed stock position, with a market value of around $350 million, which is only about one-sixth of the SpaceX stake. After SpaceX shares appeared in public filings for the first time, the total value of Harvard's disclosed U.S. stock portfolio increased by approximately 135% from the previous quarter.

Harvard's SpaceX position may include both direct investments and shares initially acquired through venture capital funds that were subsequently distributed to Harvard's account. Because SpaceX remained a private company for a long time prior to its IPO, university endowments typically had to participate indirectly through private equity or venture capital funds.

SpaceX went public on Nasdaq on June 12, 2026, at an offering price of $135 per share. Following its listing, the stock price briefly climbed to around $225 before pulling back significantly, closing at $140 on August 14. Based on this price, Harvard's stake is currently valued at approximately $1.81 billion, down from the $2.2 billion calculated based on June 30 prices in the 13F filing.

Which Other Institutional Investors Hold SpaceX Shares?

Harvard is just one member of SpaceX's vast list of institutional shareholders. Public filings show that SpaceX's investors range from tech companies and asset managers to sovereign wealth funds, pension funds, and university endowments.

Alphabet (GOOGL) is one of SpaceX's most successful early strategic investors. In 2015, Alphabet co-participated with Fidelity in a funding round of about $1 billion, in which Alphabet invested approximately $900 million. By the end of June 2026, the value of its SpaceX holdings had grown to about $94 billion, with a book value equivalent to over 100 times its original investment.

Nvidia (NVDA) also disclosed in its second-quarter filing that it held about 123 million shares of SpaceX stock, valued at approximately $21 billion at quarter-end. This investment not only carries financial attributes but also reflects a strategic link between the two sides in AI computing infrastructure.

In addition to Harvard, the University of California Investment Office disclosed a SpaceX position valued at about $1 billion, and the University of North Carolina and Washington University in St. Louis also appear on the shareholder list. This demonstrates how university endowments' early venture capital allocation strategies are converting into publicly priceable equity assets following SpaceX's listing.
