Bankwell achieved a 260% increase in net income during the 2025 fiscal year.
The Brooklyn expansion targets a massive deposit pool to drive future growth.
High concentration in commercial real estate loans remains a primary structural risk.
Bankwell Financial Group (NASDAQ:BWFG) isn’t a household name. The regional bank makes money the old-fashioned, boring way: take in deposits and lend them back to businesses and real-estate developers. However, in all of this, the Connecticut-based bank is navigating a shift from local roots to a broader urban footprint, including an expansion into New York.
As a regional lender, Bankwell provides everything, from checking accounts to complex commercial construction financing. The stock is up 68% over the past 12 months; its trajectory clearly reflecting an operational recovery from the cyclical pressures of 2024. The question for investors is whether this recovery is the beginning of a sustainable growth story over the next few years.
Our proprietary Hidden Gems scoring system assigns Bankwell Financial Group an overall Superscore of 72 out of 100, placing it in the Above Average category. The Superscore is an AI-powered score that evaluates a company's overall strength by combining financial performance, product market position, technological capabilities, leadership quality, and relative valuation. Bankwell Financial’s business looks far more solid today than it was 18 months ago. The bank has simultaneously improved its funding mix, loan growth, net interest margins, and credit quality.
Net interest margin, which is the difference between interest income and interest expense as a percentage of average earning assets, improved by a solid 83 basis points (bps), from 2.75% in the second quarter of 2024 to 3.58% eight quarters later. Over the same period, total loans grew by 11%, while deposits grew by 12.7%. That is a significant marker that the business has improved significantly.
However, the massive improvement in profitability is what takes the cake. Net income shot up almost 10x to $12.4 million, translating to an earnings per share (EPS) of $1.52, up from just $0.14 two years earlier. Essentially, the entire operation is substantially stronger.
Not surprisingly, BWFG’s stock price has tracked profitability over this period, with return on equity (ROE) climbing to nearly 14%.

BWFG data by YCharts.
All in all, the improvement in the business seems structural, which means it is well set to continue its growth trajectory. As management explained, Bankwell is generating more revenue for every dollar of operating expense.
Additionally, the bank’s credit quality has improved, with the allowance for credit losses (ACL) on its loan portfolio falling to 1.03% from 1.36% over the two years.
There aren’t any pressing factors why the bank shouldn’t sustain the momentum it has built over the past couple of years. While inflationary fears coupled with a high-interest-rate background could still create challenges, especially in its commercial real estate loan portfolio, management seems to be positioning the business to weather these storms.
For a small but growing regional bank, Bankwell seems to be in a really good place to grow. A sustained annual earnings growth of 6%-10% could increase the stock’s valuation, potentially doubling the stock price over the next five years.
