Rocket Lab (RKLB): Q1 $200M Revenue +63%, $2.2B Backlog, $663M Defense Wins, Stock Tests $83 Breakout

Source Tradingkey

TradingKey - Rocket Lab (RKLB) is seeing record backlog numbers with very large U.S. Defense contracts in Q1 and now much stronger revenue this Q1, with revenue at $200.3 million, which is a 63.5% increase on a year-over-year basis. The backlog is at $2.2 billion following a quarter where it grew 20.2% and with a year-over-year growth of 108%. Rocket Lab is still reporting numbers in the red with a cash burn, but strong growth and backlog numbers are promising.

Rocket Lab received two contracts with the U.S. Space Force, with a value of $663 million. The next test for the Rocket Lab stock will be Q2 earnings. This is scheduled for market close on August 10. The guidance for revenue is $225 million to $240 million.

Revenue and Backlog Reached New Records

Rocket Lab backlog and revenue numbers for Q1 exceeded analyst estimates and the $200 million revenue milestone, with revenue in Q1 at $200.3 million. Revenue from Space Systems came in at $136.7 million and Launch Services at $63.7 million. Additionally, Rocket Lab is seeing a positive trend in gross margins with HASTE, which is a hypersonics and suborbital testing contract with the Space Development Agency.

The current backlog of $2.2 billion will take Rocket Lab approximately 11 quarters to fulfill based on Q1 revenue. Rocket Lab signed 31 new contracts for the Electron and HASTE suborbital contracts in Q1, which is a considerable increase over contracts signed in the entire year of 2025. Rocket Lab also booked 5 dedicated suborbital launches on the Neutron.

Space Force Awards Add $663 Million

On July 27, Rocket Lab also announced a $266 million contract with the Space Force for 12 guaranteed suborbital HASTE launches in the U.S. with an option for an additional 6 launches. HASTE supports hypersonic and missile defense with the first launch scheduled for no later than 2026.

On August 4, Rocket Lab announced a separate $397 million contract concerning the Space-Based Airborne Moving Target Indicator program. They will create, launch, and manage a set of Flatellites.

It is anticipated that the satellites will launch on Neutron. This means Rocket Lab will profit through their satellite fabrication, launch, and mission operation services. This contract also extends their reach away from only small launches, and increases the risk of involvement in government operations of greater duration.

Neutron Determines the Timing of Future Growth

Rocket Lab targets Neutron’s inaugural launch in Q4 of 2026 following a major stage tank rupture during testing in January. Rocket Lab has since then completed the first full-duration qualification burn for the vacuum variant of its Archimedes Engine. However, further delays to the Archimedes engine will further delay the revenue from contracted missions.

There is a growing customer demand for the Neutron rocket, as one customer has contracted five dedicated Neutron launches between 2026 to 2029. Additionally, the new Space Force contracts have a partial dependence on the Neutron rocket.

Rocket Lab’s stock is currently in the bullish range, having recovered from 58.30. The new bullish resistance range is between 83 and 85. A break above this resistance would lead to new Neutron gains, while a failure to break above this would lead Neutron focus to lower support. The new focus for Rocket Lab is the growth of their revenue in Q2, their increasing launch backlog, and the Neutron launch schedule.

Iridium Acquisition Expands Rocket Lab’s Scope

Rocket Lab has shown new aspirations by offering 8 billion to buy Iridium. The offer represents a $54 per share price by offering Iridium shareholders $27 in cash and the rest in Rocket Lab stock. a Deutsche Bank and Wells Fargo have committed a bridge loan of $3.6 billion with a funds disbursement expected in mid-2027.

Iridium would add more than 2.5 million customers in government, maritime, and industrial domains. Rocket Lab would have an end to end solution in satellite based communications.

This deal would add financial strain. The costs of integration and a drop in value for current shareholders would be the risk of execution. Rocket Labs management would need to prove that the income and cash Iridium generates would be worth the deal.

RKLB Tests the 83–85 Breakout Zone

Rocket Lab (RKLB) has tried breaking resistance between $83.02 and $85.05 after recovering from support at $58.30. This zone contains the 50% Fibonacci retracement, horizontal resistance and a collection of moving averages.

The RSI sits at 56, indicating improved momentum without being overbought. A daily close above $85.05 would confirm the breakout, with the next target at the $88.85 (the 61.8% Fibonacci level). Resistance after that is at $97.19, followed by $107.73 and $121.18.

If RKLB gets rejected from the $83–$85 zone, it would likely decline toward the $77.08–$77.19 support zone. If that $77.08–$77.19 support zone breaks, the next target would be $69.99, with the long-term target at $58.30. Above $85.05 the technical outlook improves, while it's likely bearish as long as the price remains in the resistance zone.

What Q2 Earnings Must Address

For Q2, Rocket Lab has provided guidance of $225 million to $240 million in revenue and a GAAP gross margin of 33%–35%. Investors will be watching to see if revenue comes in at the top of the range, if margins eroded due to the shifting product mix and if backlog has grown past $2.2 billion with the new defense contracts.

Management’s guidance for Q3 and the full year will be important as well. If they provide more color on the schedule for the first flight of Neutron, contracts, and developmental costs, it may alter how revenue is perceived in the future.

If they beat revenue estimates, but provide weaker guidance, that will cause a breakout above $85.05, but if there’s margin erosion or more delays with Neutron, the price will drop to $77.

Bottom Line

Rocket Lab opened Q2 with Q1 results of $200.3 million in revenue, a gross margin of 38.2%, and a backlog of $2.2 billion. With the $663 million of Space Force awards, defense business wins strengthen with Iridium and provide additional recurring communications revenue.

With the stock price between 83 and 85, a close above $85.05 would target $88.85 and $97.19 with a rejection of $77.19. Aside from the earnings reaction, investors need to assess whether Rocket Lab can fund Neutron and the Iridium deal without too much of a burden on margins and cash flow against shareholders. This is an analysis. Not investment advice.
