Why Is Amazon Stock Surging Today? AMZN Hits $285 as AWS AI Revenue Fuels 17% Rally

Source Tradingkey

TradingKey - Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) shares are on a tear. It rose about 5% on Monday to trade around $285, extending a new record high after reaching $278.87 earlier in the day. In one week alone, Amazon has risen about 17%, based on its impressive second quarter earnings report that beat Wall Street's estimates.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) contributed significantly to the impressive show, reinforcing investor confidence in the company's increasing AI dominance. Amazon shares are now up about 26% over the past year, giving the company a market value of nearly $2.93 trillion.

AWS Delivers Stronger-Than-Expected Growth

AWS is the obvious winner this quarter. Amazon's cloud revenues rose 37% year over year, marking a sharp uptick from the previous quarter and beating analyst estimates.

Overall, Amazon reported:

  • Net sales of $201 billion beat estimates of $197 billion.
  • AWS operating income of $27.5 billion, versus expectations of $23.6 billion.
  • Adjusted EBITDA was $53.5 billion versus the expected $50.8 billion.

Excluding one-time items, revenues were about 2% above estimates and operating income was about 11% above estimates.

The strength of AWS helped send Amazon shares soaring more than 15% after earnings, and buying momentum has continued into this week.

AI Demand Continues to Drive AWS

Investors were particularly interested in AWS's growing artificial intelligence arm, beyond the metrics. The cloud division's backlog grew 36% from the previous quarter to $496 billion, more than doubling the year-over-year figure. Amazon also pulled in $51 billion in new orders for the quarter, which provides a huge pipeline for future revenue.

AWS has been generating $25 billion in annualized AI recurring revenue, UBS noted, indicating that Amazon's AI business is not an emerging opportunity but a significant contributor to the company's growth.

The figures suggest that enterprise demand for AI infrastructure is robust, though the growth in the backlog was slightly lower than UBS expected, which was around $100 billion.

Analysts Raise Price Targets

Several Wall Street companies raised their forecasts for Amazon after the earnings release.

  • Benchmark: $400
  • TD Cowen: $350
  • Maxim Group: $330
  • UBS: $318

All maintained Buy ratings on the stock.

According to Morgan Stanley, spending on cloud infrastructure across the industry is expected to hit $1.2 trillion by 2027, and Maxim analyst Tom Forte urged investors to buy shares below the $300 mark.

Outlook Suggests More Growth Ahead

Amazon is forecasting revenue between $197 billion and $202 billion in the third quarter, while operating income is expected to be in the range of $22.5 billion and $26.5 billion.

Management said the timing of Prime Day and increased capital expenditure on AI will impact quarterly results. The company is investing heavily in AI infrastructure and custom chips to meet increasing demands in the cloud space.

BNP Paribas also continued its positive outlook, noting that AWS may one day be a $1 trillion company if AI adoption keeps going at its current rate.

Amazon (AMZN) Technical Picture Remains Strong

Amazon has rebounded strongly and is now trading significantly above its key moving averages. Stocks are approximately 14% above their 20-day moving average and 18% above their 200-day moving average.

That may result in some pullback in the short term, but the momentum indicators remain bullish. The MACD is still pointing to fresh bull momentum, indicating that buyers remain in control.

Key Levels to Watch

The price targets for Wall Street are now $318 to $400, indicating additional optimism following the earnings announcement.

Technically:

  • Resistance: Around $278.50-$279, near the recent breakout area.
  • Support: $225, where buyers has intervened in prior pullbacks.

Investors will be focused on how AWS turns its outstanding backlog into sales, how Amazon plans to spend on AI, and if guidance for the holiday quarter matches what is forecasted for growth. However, following a robust period of rally, it is not surprising for the market to experience some volatility in the near-term, but the long-term prospects are linked to the strength of demand for AWS and AI.

Bottom Line

Amazon's strong second-quarter results have reinforced investor confidence, with AWS once again leading the company's growth story. Rapid AI adoption, a record cloud backlog, and higher analyst price targets support the long-term outlook. While the stock may see short-term volatility after its sharp rally, Amazon remains well positioned to benefit from expanding enterprise AI spending. Investors should monitor AWS backlog conversion, AI investments, and upcoming holiday-quarter guidance for signs that the current momentum can continue.
