Self-driving truck specialist Aurora Innovation (NASDAQ:AUR) had an October to forget, as far as its stock was concerned. A lackluster quarterly earnings report drained investor sentiment on the company, as did a change by an analyst tracking its fortunes. With these roadblocks, Aurora's shares skidded to an almost 21% loss across the Halloween month.

Pumping the brakes

On Oct. 1, Evercore ISI's Chris McNally updated his take on Aurora's equity. He continues to be bullish on the company, although, according to reports, he pointed out that it didn't disclose any notable new clients during its annual analyst day. More impactfully, he removed Aurora stock from his company's tactical action positioning (TAP) list of hot stocks to buy on short-term catalysts.

In a slightly more positive development on the analyst front, one week later Oppenheimer (NYSE:OPY) pundit Colin Rusch raised his price target on Aurora's shares. Granted, this wasn't a major hike -- from $15 per share to $16 -- but Rusch did maintain his outperform (read: buy) recommendation.

Aurora cruised through the rest of the month without much news to report until Oct. 28, when it opened the hood on those quarterly results.

Since autonomous vehicles are still very much the exception rather than the rule on the world's roads, Aurora's revenue remained modest in the third quarter. It booked $3 million on the top line, which was notably better than the $1 million it earned in the same period of 2025. Due to an uptick in costs, particularly a 13% rise in crucial research and development spending, the company's headline net loss deepened. It was $234 million, or $0.12 per share, against the year-ago deficit of $201 million. Both headline metrics were basically in line with analyst estimates.

This wasn't an especially eventful quarter for Aurora. It signed a memorandum of understanding with transportation company Charger Logistics, under which the latter will buy and operate 500 trucks equipped with the auto tech company's assisted-driving software. Deliveries should occur next year and in 2028. Aurora didn't provide any financial details of the arrangement.

The need for bigger wins

Investors in companies that specialize in a cutting-edge technology expect their investments to make tangible progress quarter by quarter. I think this is what dinged Aurora in October, more than the continuing nine-figure losses and persistently thin revenue. The Charger Logistics deal will provide some welcome coin for the company's coffers, but as it currently exists only as a non-binding MOU, we'd hardly be able to count on it, even if we knew what dollar figure we were looking at.

I should emphasize that this is a highly speculative stock, although Aurora has made significant strides with its technology, and a small fleet of its trucks runs key commercial routes in the U.S. Southwest. Still, it needs to show some greater progress for investors to get more excited about its stock; until then, the shares could very well languish or drop further.
