In the evolving landscape of retail, choosing between a high-growth value player and a dominant sports equipment giant requires a close look at performance and price. To decide which is a better buy, you should examine Dick's Sporting Goods Inc. (NYSE:DKS) and Five Below Inc. (NASDAQ:FIVE).

Dick's focuses on high-performance gear for serious athletes, while Five Below targets impulse buys for teens and kids. These companies are being compared because they both battle for consumer discretionary dollars, yet they utilize vastly different store formats and pricing strategies to capture market share.

The case for Dick's Sporting Goods

Dick's Sporting Goods operates a massive network of retail banners including Golf Galaxy, Public Lands, and the integrated Foot Locker business. The company serves two primary groups: traditional athletes and "sneakerheads" who follow the latest footwear trends. By utilizing its ScoreCard Rewards program, which includes nearly 30 million members, the retailer ensures that over 75% of its core sales come from loyal customers.

Recently, the company boosted its brand visibility through a high-profile multi-year partnership with basketball star Caitlin Clark. This focus on premium partnerships and a robust loyalty database helps the company maintain a competitive edge in the sports apparel market. The retailer continues to focus on its House of Sport and Foot Locker banners to drive engagement across North America and international markets.

In FY 2025, revenue reached about $17.2 billion, representing a significant 28% increase compared to the previous year. This growth was largely supported by its various business segments, though net income was approximately $849.2 million for the period. While revenue grew sharply, the net margin, which measures how much of every dollar in sales remains as profit, was roughly 4.9%.

As of its January 2026 balance sheet, the company maintained a debt-to-equity ratio of approximately 1.4x. This ratio measures total debt (short-term plus long-term) divided by shareholder equity, indicating how much the company relies on borrowing to fund its operations. The current ratio, which measures the ability to cover short-term liabilities with short-term assets, was close to 1.5x.

During FY 2025, the business generated free cash flow of about $400.2 million. Free cash flow is calculated as cash flow from operations minus capital expenditures, representing the cash a company has left to pay dividends or reinvest in its growth. This cash generation supports the company as it navigates the competitive retail landscape.

The case for Five Below

Five Below has carved out a unique niche among retail stocks by offering products at price points typically between $1 and $5. The company creates an experiential in-store atmosphere that draws in kids and teens looking for affordable gadgets, toys, and lifestyle items. With nearly 1,970 stores across 46 states, the retailer relies on a high-volume, low-cost model that encourages frequent visits.

This specialty value approach targets a younger demographic while attracting a wide range of value-oriented shoppers. The company also utilizes digital channels, including an e-commerce website and mobile app, to drive brand awareness and customer engagement. This multi-channel strategy is designed to keep the brand relevant as shopping habits shift toward digital platforms.

In FY 2025, revenue reached around $4.8 billion, a jump of roughly 23% year over year. The company reported net income of approximately $358.6 million, which is an improvement over the previous year. Five Below maintained a healthy net margin of about 7.5% during this period, indicating efficient conversion of sales into profit.

As of its January 2026 balance sheet, Five Below carried a debt-to-equity ratio of approximately 0.9x. This figure shows total debt (short-term plus long-term) divided by shareholders' equity, indicating a relatively low reliance on debt relative to its equity base. The company's current ratio was strong at roughly 2.0x, providing a solid cushion for its operational needs.

For FY 2025, free cash flow was about $411.7 million. Free cash flow, or cash flow from operations minus capital expenditures, remains a key indicator of the company's ability to fund its aggressive store opening schedule. This financial flexibility allows the retailer to continue expanding its physical footprint into new markets.

Risk profile comparison

Dick's Sporting Goods faces intense competition from both general retailers and specialty brands like Adidas (OTC:ADDDF) and Under Armour Inc. (NYSE:UAA). A significant risk involves its supply chain, as the company relies heavily on Nike Inc. (NYSE:NKE) for approximately 31% of its merchandise. Any disruption in this relationship or broader supply issues could hurt inventory levels significantly.

Furthermore, the company is managing the complex integration of the Foot Locker business and faces class action lawsuits regarding its disclosures about inventory and growth prospects. These legal challenges and the need to realize synergies from recent acquisitions represent ongoing hurdles for the business. Management must balance these expansion risks with the need to maintain store performance.

Five Below is highly dependent on merchandise manufactured overseas, particularly in China. This exposes the business to regulatory changes and potential tariffs that could raise costs and squeeze its low-price model. The company also deals with operational risks from an aggressive store opening schedule, which requires a perfectly synchronized distribution network.

Like its competitor, Five Below is involved in class action litigation concerning its inventory management and growth claims. It also faces separate consumer lawsuits concerning its tariff refund practices. These legal and regulatory pressures could impact the company's ability to maintain its historical growth rates and profitability.

Valuation comparison

Dick's Sporting Goods appears significantly cheaper than Five Below based on both its earnings and sales multiples, suggesting a lower market premium for the sporting goods leader.

Which stock would I buy for 2027?

Dick's is winning in the hotly competitive sporting goods sector. The business had about 7% market share before the pandemic and ended its fiscal 2026 with 9% share, according to stock research firm Argus. That's very good growth considering the sporting goods market sees heavyweights Walmart Inc. (NASDAQ:WMT), Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN), and others heavily into selling the same category.

The company believes footwear is the growth engine for the company as a whole, hence its enthusiasm for the Foot Locker acquisition. Foot Locker will help Dick's strengthen relationships with brands like Nike and, hopefully, lead to access to higher-profile product launches. Foot Locker also gives Dick's a footprint in cities, where it is difficult to open a big-box store. Dick's also has a youth sports-focused app, GameChanger, that generates revenue from its scheduling capabilities and serves as a way to bring new customers into stores.

Thanks to the Foot Locker buy and improved merchandising, Dick's should add $5 billion in sales this fiscal year, bringing total sales to more than $22 billion, and see net income exceed $1 billion.

Meanwhile, Five Below is one of the hottest names in brick-and-mortar retail. The company sees impressive unit economics, with each new store it opens paying back its cost in about a year, which has management focused on growing through opening more stores. The plan is to add 150 stores annually, and Wall Street analysts say that even at that pace, management appears to have a good focus on finding quality locations.

The company has really taken to social media as a driver of foot traffic, leading to a very impressive 18% increase in same-store sales in the first half of its current fiscal 2027. Just as impressive, the company continues to expand its gross margins even as the Trump tariffs have raised costs for much of the product it sells.

For fiscal 2027, analysts see revenue growing 20% to $5.17 billion, with net income jumping 40% or more to around $360 million.

Usually, choosing among retailer stocks comes down to a valuation decision, provided the other aspects of the business are healthy. Here, however, Five Below is in the middle of a run that gives it the profile of a stock worth paying a premium for, given its unit economics and overall growth. Go with Five Below even at its price premium--for long-term investors, the price should be worth the rewards.
