Coastal Financial: 3 Key Takeaways for Long-Term Investors

Source The Motley Fool

Key Points

  • Coastal Financial returned to profitability with $13.8 million in net income.

  • Management targeted over $20 million in annualized expense savings over six quarters.

  • Banking-as-a-Service program fee income grew 17.6% from the second quarter.

On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 29, 2026, Coastal Financial (NASDAQ:CCB) reported a return to net profitability after absorbing heavy losses from a single fintech partner program in the prior quarter. For long-term investors, the rebound demonstrates the underlying resilience of the bank's digital infrastructure model and its ability to maintain capital buffers during credit events.

Three things management said stand out.

1. Core Earnings Power Survived a High-Profile Credit Misstep

The bank bounced back from a $42.1 million net loss in the second quarter by relying on partner credit enhancements, which covered nearly 97% of nonperforming loans in its Banking-as-a-Service unit (where non-bank technology firms partner with banks to offer financial products). That risk-sharing structure limited damage and helped rebuild capital reserves.

We absorbed that impact, returned to profitability in the following quarter, and strengthened our capital ratios. That is what a resilient model looks like.
-- Eric Sprink, Chief Executive Officer

2. Management Focuses on Cutting Controllable Expenses

Building digital banking technology requires heavy upfront investment in software and personnel. Now management plans to prune vendor redundancies and underperforming products to expand operating margins over the next six quarters.

We have identified over $20 million in potential annualized savings in noninterest expenses and expect to achieve these potential savings over the next 4 to 6 quarters.
-- Christopher Adams, Executive Chairman

3. Deposit Base Remains Intact Despite Fintech Consolidation

When regional bank Valley National Bancorp agreed to acquire partner Bluevine, it created potential deposit runoff for Coastal Financial. Management maintains extensive contingent borrowing capacity and off-balance-sheet sweep deposits, allowing it to absorb partner ownership changes without disrupting overall funding.

We do not expect the transaction or any resulting changes to the Bluevine deposit relationship to have a material or adverse effect on our liquidity or funding profile even if our relationship with Bluevine is terminated following the consummation of their transaction.
-- Eric Sprink, Chief Executive Officer

Looking Ahead

Platform investments in compliance and data infrastructure drive operating momentum, and the bank leverages those foundational assets to expand partner fee income. Its key advantages center on proprietary onboarding tools and credit enhancement contracts that protect the balance sheet. Management is watching expense discipline and underwriting quality across all active relationships.

Coastal has built a scalable, regulated platform through significant investment in people, technology, compliance, data, and risk management infrastructure.
-- Christopher Adams, Executive Chairman

Capital ratios remain strong, positioning the business to capture new partners while managing partner churn across the digital ecosystem.

Our capital, liquidity, and operating momentum provide a strong foundation, and we are focused on operating with discipline.
-- Eric Sprink, Chief Executive Officer
