Eastern Bankshares returned $89.1 million of capital to shareholders in Q3.
Fixed-rate assets worth $1 billion will reprice in the fourth quarter.
Assets under administration increased to $11.6 billion.
On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 23, 2026, Eastern Bankshares (NASDAQ:EBC) delivered $111 million in operating net income, which measures earnings from core banking operations. That profitability provides the bank with excess capital to repurchase shares while it navigates higher deposit costs. Three key statements from executive leadership show how the business plans to sustain that momentum.
Rising deposit competition squeezed the bank's net interest margin, which measures the difference between interest earned on loans and interest paid on deposits. However, $1 billion of fixed-rate assets repricing at higher yields next quarter will help protect profitability.
We believe that the fixed-rate asset repricing will outpace deposit cost increases, leading to a slightly better margin.

Mergers among competitors across New England have disrupted local banking relationships. Management is using its local decision-making and community roots to recruit talented lenders and win new commercial borrowers.
We believe there are a lot of opportunities in the commercial banking segment, and we are well positioned to gain share.
-- Denis Sheahan, Chief Executive Officer
The bank generated capital well above its growth requirements and returned $89.1 million to shareholders through repurchases and dividends in the third quarter. Leadership is focusing strictly on shrinking share count rather than pursuing whole-bank acquisitions.
The profitability performance of the company is improving significantly. We are generating a lot of capital. We are returning a lot of capital, and that is exactly what we are focused on. We are not focused on M&A at all.
-- Denis Sheahan, Chief Executive Officer
Credit trends remain stable across commercial real estate, and local underwriting keeps asset quality clean. Low exposure to high-risk office sectors helps protect the balance sheet from emerging local-market risks.
Overall, customers remain resilient as business activity continues to generate demand for financing.
-- Denis Sheahan, Chief Executive Officer
Strong core deposits, local decision-making, and tight cost controls support long-term franchise value while leadership maintains deposit pricing discipline.
While these factors may influence the pace of loan and earnings growth in 2027, we believe our relationship-based banking model, disciplined expense management, and strong balance sheet position us well to continue delivering attractive returns to shareholders.
