Over the last five years, as Nike (NYSE: NKE) shareholders know well, its stock price has been in steady decline. As of this writing, shares have dropped 77%, while the S&P 500 has climbed 67% over the same period.

The company is in the midst of a turnaround, and it's simply taking longer than expected, with challenges to still overcome. That's the bad news. The good news is that there is a bright spot that's hard to ignore.

The quiet income stock

Despite the stock price struggles, Nike has not only maintained dividend payments but also increased them. It's not a Dividend King yet, as it hasn't boosted its dividend payouts for 50 consecutive years, but it's still on the path to becoming one.

As of November 2026, the iconic retailer has increased its dividend payout for 24 consecutive years. What's also difficult to ignore is the dividend's yield, which currently sits at a generous 4.3%. Falling stocks plus rising payouts result in higher yields.

Nike's stock price needs to stabilize

The days of Nike growing its revenue by nearly 100% in a single quarter, as it did in the fourth quarter of 2021, are likely long gone. It's transforming into a more mature company, which isn't a bad thing, as long as expectations reflect that.

That said, with Nike as an income stock, I still would wait for the time being before purchasing shares or adding to a position. Sales in 2027 are expected to decline by a high-single-digit percentage, and there don't appear to be many near-term catalysts that could meaningfully reverse the stock price losses.

And if the stock price keeps declining, that can negate those dividend payouts.

Nike is, however, certainly a stock worth watching, thanks to its path to becoming a Dividend King and the 4.3% yield.
