On its first quarter of fiscal 2027 earnings call, held on Oct. 28, 2026, Provident (NASDAQ:PROV) announced modest loan growth and expanding interest margins. A disciplined balance sheet and aggressive capital returns show how regional lenders can generate shareholder value in a higher rate environment. Three things management said stand out.

1. Loan Repricing Drives Yields Upward

Higher mortgage rates are helping the bank replace lower-yielding assets with higher-yielding loans, though rising wholesale borrowing costs will temper future net interest margin expansion.

We have approximately $116 million of loans repricing to an interest rate that we anticipate will be approximately 65 basis points higher to a weighted average interest rate of 7.21% from the current interest rate of 6.56%.
-- Donavon Ternes, President and Chief Executive Officer

2. Shareholder Capital Returns Outpace Net Income

Management returned surplus capital aggressively through dividends and share buybacks, backed by capital ratios that far exceed regulatory standards for well-capitalized institutions.

During the September 2026 quarter, we repurchased approximately 86,000 shares at a total cost of $1.6 million. Combined with approximately $880,000 of cash dividends paid to our shareholders, total capital returned to shareholders represented approximately 158% of the September quarter's net income.
-- Donavon Ternes, President and Chief Executive Officer

3. Credit Quality Holds Firm With Minimal Problem Loans

Asset quality remains excellent, with minimal commercial real estate office exposure and virtually no bad debt emerging across the entire portfolio.

You will note that nonperforming assets were just $504,000 or 4 basis points of total assets at September 30, 2026, essentially unchanged from $505,000 at June 30, 2026.
-- Donavon Ternes, President and Chief Executive Officer

Looking Ahead

Loan origination activity is holding steady despite seasonal slowdowns, giving leadership space to focus on controlled balance sheet expansion.

Our short-term strategy focuses on disciplined balance sheet growth by expanding our loan portfolio. We believe this approach is well suited to the current economic environment and the normalized yield curve.
-- Donavon Ternes, President and Chief Executive Officer

Low nonperforming assets and pristine underwriting provide a structural advantage over peers struggling with commercial real estate defaults. Management is keeping a close eye on wholesale funding costs and payoff volume as interest rates adjust.

We exceed well-capitalized capital ratios by a significant margin, providing flexibility to execute on our business plan and capital management goals.
-- Donavon Ternes, President and Chief Executive Officer

Brent's $115 front month sits $4.6 above January — the $14 spread to WTI is the supply-risk premiumDecember Brent trades at $115.29 while January is $110.71, a $4.58 backwardation. The December Brent-WTI spread is $14.2, versus a $3-5 normal. That gap, not the headline, is where the Middle East supply risk is priced. Here is what the curve says, why the December contract's expiry on October 30 will mechanically cut the headline by $4.6, and the 108.81 neckline that decides the next move.
