Key Points

On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 21, 2026, BankUnited (NYSE:BKU) reported net income of $72 million. The bank expanded its net interest margin, the difference between interest earned on loans and interest paid on deposits, ahead of management's target timeline. Management achieved this margin expansion by lowering deposit costs rather than expanding loan volume for its own sake.

Three takeaways from the call stand out for long-term investors.

1. Pricing Discipline Drives Net Interest Margin Expansion

Net interest margin expanded ahead of management's target timeline. BankUnited achieved this gain by prioritizing pricing discipline over loan volume.

We had given you guidance that by fourth quarter we will be at 315 NIM. We are happy to be actually at 316 already in the third quarter.
-- Rajinder Singh, Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer

2. Management Prioritizes Profitability Over Lending Volume

BankUnited continues to restrict commercial and industrial lending, which provides operating loans to businesses, when pricing spreads fail to deliver full relationship value. Management accepts lower transaction volume to protect profitability.

The reason it is good is because we have been very laser-focused on pricing and profitability and refuse to do business just for volume sake. That is the trade-off we have made, and it is showing.
-- Rajinder Singh, Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer

3. Share Buybacks Accelerate During Market Weakness

Management repurchased shares as the stock price dropped during the quarter. Capital returns through buybacks and dividends reduced outstanding share count while maintaining a Common Equity Tier 1 capital ratio, a key measure of core financial strength, of 12.1%.

Because the stock was weak this quarter, we took this opportunity to step up our buyback speed, and we bought back a lot more shares this quarter than previous quarters. I think we bought back 2.1 million shares for about $97 million.
-- Rajinder Singh, Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer

Looking Ahead

Commercial lending production is building momentum across growth markets as the bank enters its peak fourth quarter. Expanding in regions like Texas provides new origination channels while maintaining strict pricing standards.

Expect margin to expand again modestly in the fourth quarter quite like it did last year.
-- Rajinder Singh, Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer

Disciplined balance sheet management remains central to long-term returns as borrowing costs adjust.

I think the dynamics that have been playing are still very much the same. Balance sheet is still changing left and right side. As long as we keep doing that, there is no reason why a margin cannot keep expanding.
-- Rajinder Singh, Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer

Brent's $115 front month sits $4.6 above January — the $14 spread to WTI is the supply-risk premiumDecember Brent trades at $115.29 while January is $110.71, a $4.58 backwardation. The December Brent-WTI spread is $14.2, versus a $3-5 normal. That gap, not the headline, is where the Middle East supply risk is priced. Here is what the curve says, why the December contract's expiry on October 30 will mechanically cut the headline by $4.6, and the 108.81 neckline that decides the next move.
