Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) announced this morning that it plans to invest $3 billion in Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META), one of its biggest customers.

Nvidia will make the investment as part of Meta's recently announced stock offering. The companies said they will expand their work on Muse, Meta's popular AI assistant, working to improve Meta's family of models that power it.

That technical partnership aims to improve both training -- building an AI model -- and inference, using the model after it's been trained. Meta said it plans to expand its deployment of Nvidia's latest hardware: Vera Rubin GPU systems, Vera CPUs, and networking technology.

The companies also said they are considering working on tools that would help AI agents operate securely as well as help monitor their behavior, but those discussions are still exploratory and nothing has been agreed upon.

What Nvidia's expanded Meta partnership actually adds

This is a deepening of an already close relationship. While we don't know where exactly Meta ranks, it was very likely already one of Nvidia's biggest customers, and in February, Meta said it would deploy millions of Nvidia's Blackwell and Vera Rubin GPUs, along with CPUs and networking equipment. And given the lack of detail in this announcement, it makes it a little hard to tell how much new business Nvidia is actually getting here. Meta says it will use more of its hardware, but the announcement doesn't say how much more or what those additional purchases will be worth.

And their engineers were already working together, so the technical partnership sounds like an extension of work they were already doing.

Nvidia's growth depends on continued AI spending

More than three years into the AI boom, Nvidia is still going strong. Last quarter, the company's top-line reached $96.2 billion, more than double what it recorded a year earlier. Operating profit grew a whopping 124% to $63.7 billion. It's easy to take this for granted at this point, but those really are simply incredible growth numbers for a company of this size.

Unsurprisingly, Nvidia's data center business accounted for more than 90% of sales. While that is precisely what's fueling the company's rapid growth, it means Nvidia's fate is directly tied to the rest of the AI industry. Nvidia -- or rather, its stock price -- cannot afford to have the AI capex spend slow. The deal made today makes sense.

Meta needs capital, and Nvidia is flush with cash. A $3 billion infusion gives Nvidia an appreciating asset -- Meta stock -- while ensuring a major customer continues to purchase its hardware.

This is one of many such deals that, while completely above-board, have raised concerns over whether Nvidia is using its considerable balance sheet to paper over cracks in a less-than-healthy AI ecosystem. I think there's something to these claims, though I would caution investors to read too much into a deal like this. The reality is, Nvidia has a whole lot of cash on hand and needs to do something with it. Meta stock is a reasonable place to deploy that capital.

That said, given the recent issues that hyperscalers like Meta -- and especially neoclouds like CoreWeave -- have been facing related to debt financing, it's reasonable to question how sustainable the AI buildout really is at this point.
