As digital communities and visual communication evolve, investors are weighing the merits of different social platforms. Should you put your capital behind Reddit (NYSE:RDDT) or Snap (NYSE:SNAP) in 2026?

Reddit operates a community-driven platform built on niche interests and deep archives, while Snap focuses on ephemeral messaging for younger demographics. Both companies compete for digital advertising dollars against much larger rivals. Here is a comparison of their financials, user growth, and valuation to see which fits better in a diversified portfolio of investing in social media stocks.

The case for Reddit

Reddit operates a massive community platform where users create topic-based discussions and exchange insights. The company generates the majority of its revenue through third-party advertising, which accounted for approximately 94% of revenue in 2025. Customer concentration adds a layer of risk to the business, as the top ten largest advertisers account for roughly 21% of total revenue. Reddit is also exploring a content licensing model where it sells data to companies training generative artificial intelligence models.

In its 2025 fiscal year (FY), revenue reached $2.2 billion, representing a year-over-year increase of 69.4%. The company reported net income of $529.7 million during this period. This resulted in a net margin of 24.1%, which is a significant improvement over the net loss reported in the prior fiscal year. High growth and positive earnings suggest the platform is successfully scaling its ad business.

As of its December 2025 balance sheet, the company carried a debt-to-equity ratio of zero, indicating it has no total debt relative to its shareholder equity. Its current ratio, which measures the ability to pay short-term obligations with current assets, was 11.6x. Free cash flow for the year was $684.2 million. Note that stock-based compensation (SBC) represented 49.7% of operating cash flow, which inflates reported cash generation since SBC is a non-cash expense added back in the cash flow statement.

The case for Snap

Snap is a technology company focused on its Snapchat camera application and various augmented reality services. It derives a substantial majority of its revenue from third-party advertising, which accounted for 87% of total revenue in FY 2025. While advertising remains the primary driver, the company has successfully introduced Snapchat+, a subscription model with more than 25 million subscribers. Snap works with a broad range of advertisers from small businesses to global brands.

In FY 2025, revenue reached $5.9 billion, a growth rate of 10.6% compared to the previous year. Despite the revenue growth, the company reported a net loss of $460.5 million. This resulted in a net margin of negative 7.8%. While the net margin has improved from the previous year, the company continues to focus on reaching consistent net profitability as it scales its global user base.

As of its December 2025 balance sheet, Snap had a debt-to-equity ratio of 2.1x, meaning its total liabilities exceed shareholder equity. The current ratio stood at 3.6x, suggesting a healthy liquidity position for near-term needs. Free cash flow for the period was $437.2 million. Note that stock-based compensation represented 155% of operating cash flow, meaning reported cash generation is heavily inflated by this non-cash add-back.

Risk profile comparison

Reddit faces risks related to user base concentration and the necessity of maintaining high engagement levels to attract advertisers. Competition for user attention is intense, coming from large platforms like Alphabet, Meta Platforms, and TikTok. Furthermore, the company relies on volunteer moderators, and any inconsistencies in content moderation could lead to advertiser churn or reputational damage. The platform is also subject to evolving global regulations and ongoing securities litigation.

Snap relies heavily on advertising revenue, which remains sensitive to macroeconomic shifts and changes in user tracking capabilities on mobile operating systems. The company faces significant platform dependencies, particularly on Apple and Alphabet for its mobile infrastructure. Intense competition for younger demographics from other social media sites, such as Pinterest, poses a threat to long-term growth. Snap also manages ongoing legal and regulatory exposure regarding child safety and data privacy.

Valuation comparison

Reddit carries a higher sales multiple reflecting its faster growth and positive net margin, while Snap appears cheaper on a revenue basis but carries higher debt.

Which stock would I buy in 2026?

I would invest in Reddit over Snap. In fact, I bought shares in Reddit while I sold my Snap holdings. Snap is cheaper from a valuation perspective, but that's because it has yet to make a profit, and its revenue growth is far below Reddit's.

Snap grew second-quarter sales by a solid 19% year over year to $1.3 billion, but it saw a year-over-year decline in average daily active users in North America, its largest market. This is not an encouraging sign, as it could signal waning interest in Snap's offerings.

Reddit continues to experience strong revenue expansion. Its Q2 sales of $805 million represented a 61% year-over-year increase, and the eighth consecutive quarter of over 60% growth. The trend demonstrates the company's ability to successfully generate sales from its daily active users, which increased 18% year over year in Q2.

Reddit's ability to continue growing its audience while remaining profitable, with a 183% year-over-year increase in Q2 net income, demonstrates it's a well-run company. That’s why I chose to buy shares in this social media giant.
