Vanguard Total World Stock ETF (NYSEMKT:VT) provides comprehensive exposure to both domestic and international markets, while iShares Core MSCI Total International Stock ETF (NASDAQ:IXUS) excludes U.S. equities to focus solely on non-U.S. opportunities.

Investors seeking broad equity diversification often choose between a single global fund or a combination of regional funds. While both of these products cover thousands of stocks across developed and emerging markets, the primary distinction is whether the portfolio includes or excludes the world's largest equity market: the United States. This choice fundamentally dictates how an investor constructs their overall asset allocation strategy.

Which looks like the better buy

Gaining exposure to international stocks via a global exchange-traded fund is a great way to diversify your stock portfolio. But VT and IXUS are very different funds, and the better choice between the two likely comes down to what you already own. If you're starting from nothing, an early entry into VT makes a lot of sense -- with one purchase, you'll own shares of more than 10,000 companies around the world, including the dominant U.S. technology names.

But if you already have some of those companies in your portfolio, either individually or via another broad index fund like one that tracks the S&P 500 it may be either unnecessary or detrimental to double up on that concentration with VT. IXUS gives you low-cost access to more than 4,500 companies outside the U.S., meaning you'll get instant diversification geographically, but also by industry, as IXUS also gives you significant exposure to the financials and industrials segments.

IXUS also offers about double the dividend payout of VT, which may be appealing to income investors. But it's also the reason that IXUS has performed in line with VT over the last few years. When measured on price appreciation alone -- that is, without dividends reinvested -- IXUS comes up short, delivering a 28.37% gain over the last five years compared to VT's 50.2% share price gain.
