Crypto Market Today, Sept. 15: Crypto Prices Plummet as Clarity Act Fails, Here's What it Means for Crypto

Source The Motley Fool

Crypto assets fell sharply this evening after the long-awaited Clarity Act, a key piece of crypto legislation, failed to pass a Senate vote. As of 4.33 PM on Sept. 15, Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) had fallen 4.7% to $75,758.66, Ethereum (CRYPTO:ETH) was down 7.6% to $$2,398.80, and Solana (CRYPTO:SOL) dropped 6.5% to $96.71. The total crypto market cap was down 3.7% to $2.68 trillion.

What's driving crypto markets

Cryptocurrencies and crypto stocks slid during intraday trading as traders eyed this evening's Senate vote. Prices fell even further following a 49-50 vote on the Clarity Act, which had needed 60 votes to pass. Rising oil prices and a high likelihood that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates also weighed on digital assets, but today it was Washington that drove crypto markets.

What this means for investors

Many crypto investors had hoped the Clarity Act would give the industry a solid framework from which to grow in the U.S. It would have set out which authority had jurisdiction over different types of digital assets and put an end to the debate over what constitutes a security, which has dogged several major cryptocurrencies.

Looking to the future, the legislation would have given a firm foundation for expansion, particularly in parts of the blockchain world that overlap with traditional finance, such as stablecoins and real-world asset tokenization. That could be why Ethereum and Solana -- programmable cryptos that underpin those sectors -- have fallen harder than Bitcoin today.

Clear rules enshrined in law would reduce the roadblocks in blockchain adoption for banks and financial institutions that have to follow strict compliance rules. However, today's setback won't stop crypto development. Partly because the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) are already readying their own crypto asset guidance. Plus, banks, payment processors, and institutions are already integrating blockchain into their operations.

Crypto momentum, which had started to pick up, may slow again in the coming months. However, today's vote is unlikely to undo years of progress in mainstream adoption and integration of cryptocurrency, and that's what is important in the long term.
