September is a month of new beginnings. The school year starts, leaves change colors, and this year, Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) is entering its Ternus era. On Sept. 1, 2026, longtime Apple executive John Ternus took over as CEO of the storied company as Tim Cook's 15-year tenure came to a close.

Cook, who guided the tech company to a valuation of more than $4.6 trillion, shaped an Apple era defined by operational discipline on both the manufacturing and financial fronts. Investors are rightfully wondering what this transition means for the company's future and their shares.

This CEO is not Tim Cook

Ternus joined Apple in 2001 as an engineer and worked his way up the ranks. He was instrumental in the design of several of Apple's signature products. His technical background sets Apple up for a renewed emphasis on well-crafted products. I anticipate his tenure will be defined by new innovations and designs.

While Ternus has an impressive engineering background, he is not as well-versed or experienced in finance, supply chains, and public communication as Tim Cook. The ability to work with countries such as China and to communicate strategy effectively to stakeholders will be a real test for Ternus.

Investors expect a lot from Apple

Lastly, the expectations for Apple are sky-high. Investors are accustomed to consistent execution and results from Apple. While Ternus is respected among employees, he'll need to prove that he has a real vision for Apple and can get the job done as CEO.

Investors should be cautiously optimistic. Cook made Apple into a juggernaut, but he wasn't without missteps. Ternus has had ample time to learn from his predecessor and is more than ready to step into one of the most important roles in all of tech. Apple's share price jumped 2.8% overnight leading into Sept. 1, suggesting the market (at least initially) approves of the changeover.
