Tesla Cybercab Officially Unveiled Today: Can Robotaxis Unlock New Growth Space?

TradingKey - On September 3, Tesla (TSLA) will officially unveil the Cybercab, built specifically for robotaxis, in Austin, Texas. As Tesla's first model natively designed for driverless ride-hailing scenarios, the Cybercab features a two-seat layout and gull-wing doors, eliminating traditional steering wheels and pedals, with vehicle operation relying primarily on Tesla's FSD autonomous driving system.

Boosted by expectations surrounding the launch event, Tesla shares rose over 1% in pre-market trading.

Tesla announced the start of Cybercab production in April this year and has since been conducting public road tests in Austin. However, the company has not yet disclosed when the vehicle will officially be open to the public or whether it has obtained the regulatory approvals required for full commercial operation.

Can Cybercab Move From Showcase to Commercial Operations?

The key reason this launch has drawn intense market attention is not just the new vehicle itself, but whether Tesla can truly push driverless robotaxis from product demonstrations to commercial-scale operations.

Morgan Stanley analyst Andrew Percoco believes that the significance of this Cybercab launch is higher than Tesla's typical product events. Of his $400 price target for Tesla, the autonomous taxi business contributes about $120, representing roughly 30% of the overall valuation. Bank of America was previously even more optimistic, valuing Tesla's Robotaxi business at approximately $844 billion, equivalent to about half of the company's valuation.

Percoco also noted that if Tesla only showcases the Cybercab without significantly expanding its active operating fleet, the stock price could face downward pressure. Conversely, if the company can scale its Cybercab deployment in Texas to 25 to 50 or more vehicles in the days or weeks following the event and gradually open it to the public, the market reaction could be more positive.

Jamie Meyers, senior analyst at Laffer Tengler Investments, remains cautious. He believes that following Musk's past launch style, the event may deliver strong visual impact but might not provide operational data sufficient to alter earnings forecasts. For investors, when the vehicles will officially charge fares, how many orders they can fulfill daily, and whether remote safety drivers are required are far more important than the showcase itself.

Can Cybercab Challenge Waymo With Low Costs?

Waymo currently holds a leading position in the U.S. robotaxi market, having accumulated extensive experience in public road testing and commercial operations. Tesla's advantage lies in lower vehicle costs and stronger mass production capabilities.

According to estimates, the cost per Cybercab vehicle is around $23,000 to $25,000, while Waymo vehicles equipped with LiDAR and other hardware could cost between $70,000 and $150,000.

Tesla previously revealed that the final target price for Cybercab is about $30,000. If Tesla can prove that its vision-only FSD system can operate safely without driver supervision, its fleet expansion costs could be significantly lower than Waymo's, with the potential to replicate quickly across more cities.

Just as Cybercab was unveiled, Uber (UBER) announced cuts of approximately 3,300 jobs, representing 10% of its global workforce. The company is also streamlining management layers and plans to direct more resources to core businesses such as ride-hailing, food delivery, and robotaxis, reflecting how traditional mobility platforms are accelerating their response to industry changes brought by autonomous driving.

Longtime Tesla investor Ross Gerber said, "The irony, the day before the Tesla robocab launch. Thousands lose their jobs at Uber." Gerber also referred to the affected employees as the "first victims of the AI era."
