Dogecoin (CRYPTO: DOGE) is currently down 27% for the year and trading for around $0.08. But that hasn't stopped some crypto investors from dreaming big about a return to form for the world's most popular meme coin.

In fact, some investors think Dogecoin could break through the $1 mark next year. But just what would need to happen for that to occur?

Does Dogecoin have a path to $1?

First, the bad news. In more than a decade of trading, Dogecoin has never broken through the $1 mark. Never. In fact, Dogecoin's all-time high is just $0.74, and that was back in May 2021, during the very peak of the speculative meme coin mania.

Based on its historical track record, Dogecoin is very unlikely to reach $1 in 2027. Dogecoin needs to hit a new all-time high and then gain another 33% from there.

But wait, it gets worse. That's because the move required for Dogecoin to rise from its current price of $0.08 to a future price of $1 is exponential. Dogecoin would need a more than 12-fold increase in value to get there.

To put that into context, it would be equivalent to Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) skyrocketing from its current price of approximately $80,000 to $1 million in 2027. While Bitcoin might eventually get there if it continues to crank out double- and triple-digit returns, the odds of Bitcoin getting there by 2027 are very low indeed.

What do prediction markets think?

One way to estimate the odds of Dogecoin hitting $1 in 2027 is by looking at data from online prediction markets. For example, on Kalshi, traders can trade the following prediction market contract: "When will Dogecoin hit $1?"

Right now, market participants believe Dogecoin has a 4% chance of hitting $1 by January 2027 and a 9% chance by June 2027. Yes, those are nonzero probabilities, so there is some chance of it happening. But just how realistic are those odds?

To put Dogecoin's chances of hitting $1 into perspective, let's think about similar probabilities for Bitcoin. Right now on Kalshi, traders think Bitcoin has a 4% chance of hitting $200,000 this year. Those are the exact same odds as Dogecoin hitting $1 by January 2027.

Of course, it's possible to imagine scenarios in which Dogecoin suddenly skyrockets in price. Maybe Elon Musk -- a longtime Dogecoin supporter -- announces a brand-new integration for Dogecoin with Space Exploration Technologies (NASDAQ: SPCX) or Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA). Maybe Wall Street continues to launch new investment products (such as the new Dogecoin ETF that launched last year), helping to take it mainstream.

Or maybe not. Part of the allure of investing in meme coins is the hype, buzz, and speculation that surrounds them. It's fun to imagine what could happen. But I'm certainly not investing in a coin that's down 90% from its all-time high and trading for mere pennies.
