Investors face a choice between a software pioneer struggling to find its footing and a hardware giant riding the wave of massive data center expansion in 2026. Which of these tech players is a better buy?

C3.ai (NYSE:AI) provides a specialized software platform designed to simplify the deployment of artificial intelligence applications for large enterprises. Seagate Technology (NASDAQ:STX) is a fundamental infrastructure player, manufacturing the high-capacity hard drives required to store the vast amounts of information generated by those same AI models. They represent two very different ways to play the computing revolution.

The case for C3.ai

C3.ai focuses on providing enterprise-grade software that helps businesses and government agencies deploy predictive models. The company maintains a vital strategic partnership with Shell, which was extended in June 2026 to further scale global maintenance programs. However, this relationship highlights a customer concentration risk since a few large partners account for a significant portion of revenue in the tech stocks landscape. To diversify, the business is shifting toward a consumption-based pricing model to attract smaller and mid-size enterprises.

In FY 2026, revenue reached nearly $250.3 million, which represented a decrease of approximately 35.7% from the previous year. This downward trend followed a stronger FY 2025 where revenue was close to $389.1 million. The company reported a net loss of roughly $470.4 million for the 2026 fiscal year.

As of its April 2026 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio is 0.0x, meaning the company carries no debt relative to its equity. The current ratio, which measures the ability to cover short-term liabilities with liquid assets, is approximately 6.6x. Free cash flow, calculated as cash from operations minus capital expenditures, was roughly negative $190.7 million.

The case for Seagate Technology

Seagate Technology designs and sells massive data storage solutions, primarily high-capacity hard disk drives, to hyperscale cloud providers and enterprise clients. Its data center portfolio relies heavily on master purchase agreements with scheduled deliveries based on customer demand forecasts. One major customer accounted for nearly 14% of revenue in the 2026 fiscal year, illustrating the company's reliance on a handful of large-scale buyers. The business also serves the edge and connected device markets through a broad network of retailers and distributors.

In FY 2026, revenue reached approximately $12.2 billion, marking a significant increase of about 34.1% over the prior year. This growth helped the company achieve a net income of nearly $3.2 billion. The net margin, which shows how much of each dollar of revenue remains as profit, was approximately 26.1%.

As of its July 2026 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio is roughly 1.8x, indicating the company has $1.80 in debt for every dollar of shareholder equity. The current ratio stands at approximately 1.6x, providing a moderate cushion for short-term financial obligations. Free cash flow for the period was close to $3.1 billion, representing the cash remaining after the business paid for its operating costs and equipment investments.

Risk profile comparison

C3.ai faces substantial financial risk, having accumulated a deficit of roughly $1.8 billion as of April 2026 while expecting continued losses. The enterprise AI market is also intensely competitive, with the company fighting for market share against giants like Microsoft and Amazon. While a securities class action was dismissed in July 2026, the company still navigates heavy regulatory scrutiny regarding data privacy and government contracting.

Seagate Technology deals with its own customer concentration risks, as the loss of a single hyperscale client would significantly harm its financial results. The company is also vulnerable to supply chain disruptions and geopolitical trade restrictions, particularly regarding rare earth element exports. It must also manage complex international trade laws, including those related to a 2023 settlement with the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Valuation comparison

Seagate Technology carries a much higher P/S ratio, but both companies trade at similar multiples of their Forward P/E based on future earnings estimates. The P/S ratio compares stock price to revenue, while Forward P/E measures the price against anticipated future earnings.

Which stock would I buy in 2026?

I'd go with Seagate Technology, hands down. It just capped its fiscal year with one of the strongest quarters in its history, showing this is a business that's firing on all cylinders. Revenue surged a whopping 48% year over year, free cash flow hit its highest level in over a decade, and management guided for further sequential growth heading into the next fiscal year. Cloud demand for high-capacity storage is accelerating faster than even optimistic forecasts anticipated, and Seagate's pricing power is expanding alongside it.

C3.ai, by contrast, is in the middle of a painful reset. Its own CEO described recent sales performance as "unspeakably horrible." The company cut roughly a third of its workforce, and revenue has been falling. A top-to-bottom sales reorganization is underway, which may eventually pay off, but turnarounds of this magnitude take time and carry significant execution risk. I'd stay away from this one.

For a long-term investor, owning a profitable, cash-generating company riding one of the most durable demand trends in technology is a far stronger starting point than a software company working to rebuild from the ground up.
