Joby Aviation (NYSE: JOBY) stock saw a double-digit valuation pullback in July. The company's share price declined 19.8% in the month, according to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence. The S&P 500's level wound up being roughly flat in the month, and the more growth-focused Nasdaq Composite posted a 3.2% decline over the stretch.

Joby is an early leader in the electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft space, but the outlook in the overall category is still highly speculative -- and the stock can see big valuation swings in conjunction with shifts in the market's appetite for growth stocks. Even with a significant post-earnings pop in August, the stock is still down roughly 34% year to date.

Joby stock lost ground in July as investors repositioned

Last month played host to a major repositioning across the market. While investors broadly sold out of artificial intelligence hardware plays, top players in the software space and some other industries saw strong bullish momentum that resulted in trading for the S&P 500 winding up roughly flat.

Despite little overall movement for the benchmark index in the month, some highly growth-dependent growth stocks saw big sell-offs in July as investors shifted into different industries and weighed the potential impacts of the reescalation of the U.S.'s war with Iran. The conflict and the resulting closure of the Strait of Hormuz have caused substantial increases in oil prices, and the dynamic has created inflationary pressures and uncertainty that have produced seesawing outlooks on interest rates and valuation volatility for stocks.

There wasn't any particularly bearish news for Joby Aviation in July, but there weren't any major positive developments for the company either. While Archer Aviation's unveiling of the hybrid vertical take-off and landing platform it developed in conjunction with next-gen defense specialist Anduril may have pulled some investment dollars away from Joby due to defense-oriented headlines in the month, the pullback appears to have largely been driven by broader market trends and the absence of fresh bullish news needed to buck them.

Joby's Q2 report arrived with promising news

Joby stock is up roughly 21% in August's trading as of this writing, with bullish momentum for growth stocks and the company's encouraging second-quarter report powering gains. While the company's Q2 loss of $0.25 per share came in $0.02 per share higher than the average Wall Street analyst estimate, revenue of $38.6 million topped the average forecast by roughly $8.2 million.

For a company at Joby's stage of growth, the big sales beat more than overshadowed the earnings miss. Even better, the company significantly increased its full-year sales target. The company raised its full-year revenue guidance range from between $105 million and $115 million to between $115 million and $125 million, which means that investors probably don't have to worry about the big Q2 sales beat simply being the result of unexpected contract timing.
