Barclays: 3 Key Takeaways for Long-Term Investors

Source Motley_fool

Key Points

  • Barclays expects over GBP 1.1 billion in 2027 gross efficiency savings.

  • Hedge income is projected to grow through at least 2030.

  • Equities generated 45% of year-to-date markets revenue in 2026.

On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 22, 2026, Barclays (NYSE:BCS) announced a GBP 500 million share buyback alongside a 12% increase in pre-tax profit. It's driving operational leverage by deploying artificial intelligence to automate backend support while expanding its corporate deposit base to lock in multiyear interest income. These structural changes give the bank a predictable path to higher shareholder returns across economic cycles.

Three things management said stand out.

1. Technology and Artificial Intelligence Drive Massive Efficiency Savings

Barclays is modernizing infrastructure to replace manual work with automated tools. Management expects artificial intelligence and process harmonization to reduce headcount by 5,000 positions, lowering structural expenses while maintaining business growth.

Having increased this for 2026 alone, we expect more than GBP 1.1 billion of gross efficiency savings in 2027. These actions involve an expected reduction of circa 5,000 full-time employees.
-- Anna Cross, Group Finance Director

2. Structural Hedges Lock in Revenue Growth Through 2030

The bank relies on stable client deposits to build its structural hedge--an investment strategy that reinvests short-term balances into longer-dated hedges to protect net interest income, which is the difference between interest earned on assets and paid on deposits. Rising reinvestment yields create predictable income for years ahead.

Given prevailing and expected swap rates, hedge income is likely to grow until at least 2030, as you can see from the updated maturing yield disclosure on the left.
-- Anna Cross, Group Finance Director

3. Investment Bank Pivots Toward Higher-Return Equities

Rather than expanding risk-weighted assets--the minimum capital required based on asset risk--Barclays is shifting capital within its investment bank. Expanding equity derivatives and financing balances out weaker fixed-income trading without straining the balance sheet.

We are rebalancing toward equities, which now account for 45% of the year-to-date revenues in the markets business, versus 32% in 2023. Equity derivatives and prime have driven about 90% of this growth.

Looking Ahead

Profitability is trending above long-term targets, driven by deep deposit relationships in corporate banking and persistent cost discipline. Barclays is maintaining pricing discipline and using operational leverage to fund digital platforms without taking on unnecessary balance sheet risk.

By continuing to execute our strategy with discipline and rigor, we are accelerating our ambition and securing structurally higher and all-weather returns beyond 2028.
-- Venkatakrishnan Coimbatore Sundararajan, Group Chief Executive

With three years of restructuring ending, management is shifting focus to unit-cost reductions and tech-driven productivity across all divisions.

With one quarter to go until the end of the original three-year plan, I am very pleased to say that we have met or are positioned to achieve all of our primary group objectives.
-- Venkatakrishnan Coimbatore Sundararajan, Group Chief Executive
