O'Reilly: 3 Key Takeaways for Long-Term Investors

Source Motley_fool

Key Points

  • Professional comparable store sales increased by over 10% in the third quarter.

  • Tariff refunds added $39 million to third-quarter gross margin.

  • O'Reilly set a target of 265 to 275 net new stores for 2027.

  • Motley Fool Issues Rare "Total Conviction" Buy Alert ›

On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 29, 2026, O'Reilly (NASDAQ:ORLY) raised its full-year comparable store sales guidance, which tracks sales at locations open at least a year, to a range of 5.5% to 6.5% following broad demand gains. Long-term investors should note how the auto parts retailer captures market share across both commercial repair shops and retail consumers while expanding its distribution footprint. Three things management said stand out.

1. Professional Clients Drive Market Share Expansion

Commercial repair shop demand drove top-line growth, showing that professional service clients rely heavily on the company's inventory availability. Increased transaction counts and larger average ticket totals both contributed to market share gains on the commercial side of the business.

Our professional business was the larger driver of our overall comparable store sales growth with a third quarter professional comp of slightly over 10 percent.
-- Brad W. Beckham, Chief Executive Officer

2. Tariff Refunds Provide a One-Time Gross Margin Boost

Gross margin, the percentage of sales remaining after paying direct inventory costs, reached 52.4% with help from discrete supplier payments. Although higher petroleum commodity costs created temporary pressure on the product mix, supplier reimbursements for previously paid tariffs enhanced quarterly profitability.

The largest driver of this gross margin expansion, as we noted in our press release yesterday, was a $39 million benefit from tariff refunds. Which equates to 76 basis points of rate benefit to the third quarter.
-- Brent G. Kirby, President

3. New Store Expansion Accelerates Into 2027

Opening new store locations yields the business's highest capital returns, prompting executive leadership to raise future expansion goals. Upgrades across the company's regional distribution centers, which supply local stores, support new store openings across 36 states, Canada, and Mexico.

During the third quarter, we opened 63 new stores across North America, bringing our year to date new store openings to 173 net new stores.
-- Brent G. Kirby, President

Looking Ahead

Vehicle repairs are essential for daily commuters, and management shows clear confidence in that steady demand backdrop. A tiered distribution network and deep inventory availability offer strong advantages as leadership monitors pricing discipline and store service execution.

Either way, when it comes to maintenance or repair, our customers, both professional and DIY alike, need access to a broad range of parts, and they need those parts quickly.
-- Brad W. Beckham, Chief Executive Officer

Consistent store execution positions the company to compound long-term shareholder value.

But independent of any individual quarter or how we think about the dynamics, what comparisons look like, we are operating a model and with a team that absolutely has the expectation that we will gain share over the course of time.
-- Jeremy Adam Fletcher, Chief Financial Officer
