Northpointe agreed to sell its residential mortgage origination channels to CMG.
Mortgage Purchase Program balances grew by $262.7 million from last quarter.
Selling origination channels is projected to save $50 million annually.
On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 21, 2026, Northpointe (NYSE:NPB) announced a non-binding agreement to sell its residential mortgage origination channels. Exiting this business allows the bank to eliminate unprofitable origination overhead and redirect capital toward its higher-margin specialty finance lines. Three things management said stand out.
Origination volumes couldn't cover the heavy fixed costs of running a retail mortgage network in a high-rate environment. Selling the unit lets management cut drag on earnings and focus on core banking strengths.
With today's economic and operating headwinds and with the continued evolution of mortgage distribution channels, we have reached an inflection point that no longer made the business channel viable.
-- Chuck Williams, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
The bank's Mortgage Purchase Program (MPP), a product providing short-term financing to mortgage originators, expanded rapidly as client utilization remained firm. This segment generated a $3.7 million quarterly increase in interest income.
Compared to the prior quarter, period-ending MPP balances increased by $262.7 million, and average balances increased by $237.2 million, resulting in $3.7 million quarterly increase in interest income within the channel.
-- Kevin Comps, President
Exiting consumer mortgage originations triggers $6 million to $7 million in near-term restructuring charges. Eliminating variable commissions and salaries creates massive structural cost savings starting in 2027.
I'd expect annualized expense savings in the range of $50 million-$55 million, with the bulk of which comprised of commissions, salaries, and benefits.
-- Brad Howes, Chief Financial Officer
Mortgage origination overhead is disappearing, and commercial scale takes center stage. The strategic pivot leverages relationship banking, targeted asset purchases, and specialized loan servicing to stabilize margins. Management is watching net interest margin expansion and balance sheet leverage.
Northpointe's future is centered on MPP specialty finance through strategic asset generation, relationship-driven banking, and deposit growth and specialty servicing.
-- Chuck Williams, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
Reallocating capital from lower-yielding loans into higher-yielding portfolio assets builds long-term operating leverage.
Looking forward, we have a significant opportunity to add new assets at a very attractive point in the yield curve.
