Dormant whale moves $1 billion in Bitcoin as market sits 50% below peak

Source Cryptopolitan

A lone Bitcoin transaction has ended a prolonged period of silence lasting seven months. According to blockchain tracker Lookonchain, a wallet containing 16,400 BTC, equivalent to $1.04 billion, made the transfer of its whole balance on August 3. This transfer coincides with the price of Bitcoin being approximately $62,800, which is almost 50 percent lower than its October 2025 record of $126,198, making such billion-dollar transfers by big players a noteworthy moment in the industry.

The key question is not whether or not the coins have transferred locations, but rather their future direction. On-chain data does not show evidence that the Bitcoin was sent to an established exchange, meaning that this may actually be a custody reshuffle instead of a preparation for a sale.

A wallet quiet since the start of the year empties in one move

The issuing wallet, bc1qptc9cz269u2mc5yguun5a5d6yd5c7f7ne4qj26, has not been used for approximately seven months until it transferred all its balance to a new recipient wallet: bc1qyt5gsrxp553v9fuwk8gugv…

The transaction transferred exactly 16,400 BTC, worth about $1.04 billion when it was executed.

As reported by Cypher Citadel, the transaction stands out as one of the largest 0.01% of all crypto exchanges during the past three-month period and accounts for about 0.0781% of the total Bitcoin supply of 21 million coins. According to the analytics platform, the transaction is classified as an unknown-to-unknown wallet transfer, a type of transaction typically associated with internal custody reshuffling or over-the-counter transactions instead of deposits to exchanges.

The transaction authenticity can be confirmed independently using blockchain explorers:

Bitcoin is near $62,800 and lower this week

The timing of this transaction played a big role in its meaning.

According to CryptoQuant, the price of Bitcoin on the day of the transaction was about $62,808, which was a 1.1% drop in 24 hours and a 3.8% decrease for the last week. CoinMarketCap stated that the spot exchange price was about $62,768 and that the volume of the spot exchange for the last 24 hours was almost $15.7 billion.

In light of that, the transfer of $1.04 billion amounts to approximately 6% to 7% of a regular day’s reported spot amount. This is sufficiently significant to raise eyebrows; on the other hand, it may not be “big” enough to have any impact on the market, unless the tokens find their way to exchanges’ order books.

The raw amount of the transaction tells only a small part of the story. While 16,400 BTC accounts for just 0.0781% of the total Bitcoin available in circulation, it represents a much larger proportion of Bitcoin in circulation that is actually available for trading. It is believed that millions of Bitcoins have been lost and permanently kept by long-term investors, thereby reducing the liquid Bitcoin supply for trading transactions. This is the reason why people focus less on the size of the Bitcoin transferred and more on whether the coins end up deposited into exchange addresses.

A new wallet—not an exchange

As of now, the location of the coins is shedding the most light on the matter.

Data from the blockchain reveals that the Bitcoin was sent to a wallet created specifically for this transfer rather than being sent to a known exchange address. Cypher Citadel confirmed that the nature of the trade was, in isolation, neutral, because there seems to be no known exchange presence at either end of the transaction. The firm stressed that the next window of 4 to 48 hours will be a key timeframe to look for follow-up transactions into centralized exchanges, where actual selling pressure can be expected.

In July, a Bitcoin wallet that had not been active for over eight years sent 5,907.56 BTC (equivalent to around $384 million) to another wallet address without transferring the assets to a cryptocurrency exchange. Blockchain analytics firm Glassnode notes that transfers between two wallets can indicate changes in custody, cold storage, or the process of managing funds internally between wallets. Wallet transfers to exchanges, on the other hand, are considered to be an indication that the owners might intend to sell their Bitcoins.

A larger example occurred earlier in 2025 when around 80,000 BTC that had been dormant since Satoshi’s time—valued at roughly $8 billion—was transferred for the first time in close to 14 years. Yet the transaction did not bring about an immediate flow of funds into exchanges.

So far, this billion-dollar deal follows the same trend.

Until there are further transactions on the blockchain that indicate otherwise, it appears that the coins might be moving into new wallets rather than finding themselves ready for sale. The blockchain has already logged the transaction of $1 billion worth of Bitcoins, but they have yet to indicate that the coins are headed for exchange wallets.
