Xbox Revenue Falls 7% in FY26 Despite 200 Million New Players

Microsoft’s Xbox division added over 200 million new players in fiscal 2026. Gaming revenue fell 7 percent for the year, the company said in its Q4 earnings report.

Declining console hardware sales drove much of the drop. New Xbox CEO Asha Sharma is responding with cost cuts and price increases across the business. Xbox’s gaming segment includes console hardware, first-party game sales, and subscription services such as Xbox Game Pass.

A Widening Gap Between Xbox Players and Profit

Microsoft’s fiscal year runs through June, so the FY26 figures cover the twelve months ending in June 2026. However, Microsoft’s fiscal fourth quarter overall beat Wall Street estimates, as Azure cloud growth pushed adjusted earnings higher. Gaming told a different story.

Console hardware sales dropped sharply and outweighed gains from new player numbers, pulling the segment’s annual revenue down 7 percent.

The fourth quarter alone showed a sharper split. Xbox content and services revenue, which includes Game Pass, fell 10 percent in the quarter. Hardware revenue dropped 13 percent over the same three months, according to GameDeveloper.

Microsoft had moved before the earnings report landed. In July, the company cut 4,800 jobs, including 3,200 Xbox roles, in an early reset of the gaming business. The cuts spun off four internal studios, trimming its first-party game lineup.

Hardware weakness fits a broader industry shift. Rival Sony recently confirmed it will stop producing physical PlayStation discs by 2028, part of a wider move toward digital consoles that Xbox is now pursuing. Xbox has trailed PlayStation in console hardware sales for most of the current generation, limiting room to raise prices without denting demand further.

Sharma Bets on Cost Cuts and Price Hikes

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma laid out the plan on X early Thursday.

The pricing side of that plan is already public. Xbox is raising console prices by up to $150 starting August 1, citing rising memory and storage costs, according to an Xbox Wire announcement. That follows an unusual reversal. In April, Microsoft cut Xbox Game Pass Ultimate by $7 a month. That earlier hike, however, had hurt subscriber growth.

Apple and Microsoft have both raised device prices this year, a pattern already flagged across big tech earnings. The increases tie in part to rising component costs, though supply chains and research spending play a role too.

Sharma has set a clear timeline. Xbox is not promising quick results, but by the end of fiscal year 2027, the division aims to show that new players and revenue are finally moving in the same direction. Whether price increases and cost cuts can close that gap before FY27 ends remains the key question for Xbox investors.
