Google opens Gemini Omni video to free Vids users after a paid-only start in May

On September 23, Google removed the paywall on Gemini Omni video generation in Google Vids. Anyone with a Google or Google Workspace account can now create 1080p clips at no cost with the Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash model.

Omni had been reserved for subscribers to Google’s AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra tiers since its launch in May. Non-paying users could reach it only via YouTube Shorts and YouTube Create.

Three new controls stretch scenes and pin clip lengths

More output on a personal account necessitates a Google AI subscription, while Workspace Business and Enterprise customers have larger pools that administrators manage centrally.

The tool can be found at vids.new, where desktop users can click “Create AI videos” to begin.

“We integrated our newest AI models into Google Vids so anyone with a Google Account can create videos for free,” wrote Justin Luk, a product manager on the Google Vids team.

Omni 1.1 Flash builds video from text prompts, images, audio or existing clips. Free release adds three controls.

A scene can be prolonged without the characters, lighting or setting changing mid-way. Creators can lock a clip to a specified length that will work with a script or narration.

And older AI footage is upscaled to 1080p, not regenerated.

A hands-on test got 720p clips in under 30 seconds

Google’s blog advertises full 1080p. But a real-world test yielded only 720p clips, horizontal and vertical, and one short clip took less than 30 seconds.

Google plans to incorporate Gemini 3.8 Flash-Lite text-to-speech, which will read typed scripts aloud in over 100 languages.

In Vids, each Omni 1.1 clip has SynthID, a Google DeepMind watermark embedded in the video frames. Invisible to viewers, readable by software.

The SynthID Detector from Google detects the mark, so anyone who uploads a clip there can verify it was AI-made.
