Bladex expanded its commercial portfolio to $15 billion in the quarter.
A $1 billion Panama sovereign loan drove half of portfolio growth.
Net income reached $63.2 million, up 15% year over year.
On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 27, 2026, Bladex (NYSE:BLX) announced that its commercial portfolio reached $15 billion. The expansion highlights the institution's capacity to deploy balance-sheet strength quickly across Latin America. Long-term shareholders must weigh this rapid loan growth against persistent regional spread compression.
Three things management said stand out.
Bladex expanded its commercial portfolio to $15 billion, but half of that growth came from a $1 billion sovereign loan to Panama. While the deal boosts near-term interest income, such massive individual transactions represent temporary balance-sheet events rather than repeatable core lending growth.
The Panama sovereign transactions accounted for around half of our commercial portfolio growth during the quarter and includes flexibility for early repayment.
-- Annette van Hoorde de Solís, Chief Financial Officer
Intense competition for high-quality Latin American corporate and sovereign assets is driving down loan yields across the region. Although early loan prepayments provided a temporary boost to fee recognition this quarter, underlying lending margins remain under pressure.
Competition for high-quality assets continued to pressure lending spreads across the region.
-- Jorge Salas, Chief Executive Officer
To offset compressed lending margins, Bladex is building out its transactional banking services and expanding its deposit base. Gathering cheaper corporate deposits and launching cash management platforms will give the bank a more stable funding structure over time.
Over time, this should also contribute to a more ample and stable funding base with lower costs.
-- Jorge Salas, Chief Executive Officer
Commercial portfolio expansion is settling into a higher baseline as short-term loans roll over. Bladex relies on its correspondent network to maintain liquidity without lowering underwriting standards, while management tracks regional spread compression.
Having said that, we do expect to sustain the larger commercial portfolio we have built as individual transactions mature.
-- Jorge Salas, Chief Executive Officer
Expanding deposit services and cross-border payment platforms strengthens the bank's funding advantage. Maintaining strict underwriting discipline across volatile regional markets protects long-term shareholder equity.
We enter the final quarter with strong momentum. We will continue to pursue profitable growth, maintain our risk discipline, and advance the transactional services that will deepen our client relationships.
-- Jorge Salas, Chief Executive Officer
