On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Nov. 4, 2026, American Financial (NYSE:AFG) announced record quarterly core net operating earnings driven by one-asset sales and underwriting profits. Capital discipline across property and casualty, or P&C, lines keeps the insurer compounding book value across shifting insurance cycles.

Three things management said stand out.

1. Deploying Capital Into Fixed Income Yields Near 6%

Management doubled its fixed maturity bond purchases in the third quarter compared to the first six months of the year to secure higher yields.

In response to the higher interest rate environment experienced during the third quarter, we invested a significant amount of cash in fixed maturity investments totaling approximately $1.5 billion.
-- Craig Lindner, Co-CEO

2. Sustaining Pricing Power Across Specialty Insurance Lines

Commercial policy pricing continues rising faster than underlying loss costs, allowing the firm to reach target return metrics across changing market environments.

We have reported overall renewal rate increases for 41 consecutive quarters, and we believe we are achieving overall renewal rate increases that enable us to meet or exceed our targeted returns.
-- Carl Lindner III, Co-CEO

3. Pruning California Exposure to Defend Underwriting Margins

Management is non-renewing underperforming casualty accounts and trimming liability exposure in tough legal jurisdictions to protect its combined ratio, the percentage of premiums used to cover losses and operating expenses.

In our public sector business, I think we're also being more careful about our and really kind of reducing our California exposures there.
-- Carl Lindner III, Co-CEO

Looking Ahead

Capital generation remains exceptionally high across the operating subsidiaries, creating flexibility for direct cash payouts alongside opportunistic corporate investments.

We expect our operations to continue to generate significant excess capital throughout the remainder of 2026 and into 2027, which provides ample opportunity for acquisitions, special dividends, or share repurchases over the next year.
-- Craig Lindner, Co-CEO

Deep specialization in niche markets like captive risk solutions shelters business volume against pricing swings in broad commercial coverage lines. Executive leadership is watching pricing discipline and social inflation trends while maintaining conservative reserve cushions.

AFG is well-positioned to continue to build long-term value for our shareholders for the remainder of 2026 and beyond.
-- Carl Lindner III, Co-CEO
