Financial Institutions: 3 Key Takeaways for Long-Term Investors

Source The Motley Fool

Key Points

  • Commercial loans grew 3% from the prior quarter.

  • Courier Capital reached $4 billion in assets under management.

  • Management repurchased over 185,000 shares of common stock.

On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 30, 2026, Financial Institutions (NASDAQ:FISI) reported net income available to common shareholders of $19.6 million, or $0.99 per diluted share. Commercial lending expansion supported total loan growth of 2% from the prior quarter.

Three things management said stand out.

1. Commercial Lending Continues Driving Overall Loan Expansion

Commercial real estate projects in Upstate New York led loan expansion during the quarter. That volume offset lower line utilization in commercial and industrial accounts, where businesses borrow against revolving credit lines.

Commercial lending continues to lead overall loan growth. Total commercial loans increased 3% from June 30, 2026, more than 10% from September 30, 2025.
-- Martin K. Birmingham, President and Chief Executive Officer

2. Wealth Management Fee Income Boosts Revenue Diversification

Non-interest income, which is revenue generated from fees rather than interest on loans, relies heavily on investment advisory services. Courier Capital, the company's wealth management subsidiary, helped drive full-year fee guidance higher.

Our wealth management subsidiary, Courier Capital, is the primary driver of this revenue stream, with $4 billion in assets under management as of September 30, this continues to be an important component of our diversified fee income.
-- William Jack Plants II, Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer

3. Share Repurchases Remain Primary Tool While Shares Trade Low

Management repurchased over 185,000 common shares during the quarter to return capital to shareholders. The board views stock buybacks as a straightforward capital allocation choice when market valuations remain low.

So long as we are undervalued, we know the risk of execution, and it is a very straightforward capital decision for the company.
-- Martin K. Birmingham, President and Chief Executive Officer

Looking Ahead

Operating leverage targets point to steady margin expansion as interest rate hikes reprice floating-rate assets. Treasury management infrastructure and regional commercial scale provide foundational support while leadership tracks deposit costs and pricing discipline.

Our target right now is positive operating leverage of 200 to 300 basis points and an efficiency ratio that is approaching 55%.
-- William Jack Plants II, Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer

Commercial pipelines remain replenished across core New York markets, underpinning long-term loan trajectory.

Our team remains focused on credit disciplined loan growth, core non public deposit growth, prudent expense management, and disciplined execution against our strategy.
-- Martin K. Birmingham, President and Chief Executive Officer
