Fintech payment deposits grew 28% sequentially to $766 million.
A single land loan caused 75% of the increase in nonperforming loans.
Operating expenses fell 10% year over year to $29.8 million.
On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 29, 2026, MVB Financial (NASDAQ:MVBF) reported expanding core profit margins despite taking an elevated loan loss provision. Fintech deposit growth and strict cost discipline position the bank to offset credit noise over time.
Three things management said stand out.
Core net interest margin, the spread earned on loans above funding costs, expanded sequentially to 4.02%. Rapid growth in lower-cost payment partner deposits helped drive the margin improvement across MVB Financial.
Fintech payment deposits increased 28% to $766 million, representing approximately 25% of total deposits compared with approximately 19% at June 30.

A single land loan caused nearly three-quarters of the quarterly increase in nonperforming loans, defined as loans where borrowers are behind on payments. Management established specific reserves for the credit and confirmed the broader loan portfolio shows no widespread deterioration.
Nearly 75% of the increase in nonperforming loans during the quarter was attributed to 1 acquisition and development land loan involving circumstances specific to the borrower and the property. That same credit accounted for almost half of our quarterly provision.

Noninterest expense, or operating overhead costs, fell 10% year over year to $29.8 million. Management automated workflows by launching internal digital tools and training engineers on artificial intelligence software.
We're also increasingly using AI and automation to improve efficiency across the organization with more than 100 digital assistants, which we formally call Digis, either developed or in progress.

Specialized loan demand remains active, and fintech partner onboarding continues to accelerate. Management leverages its national digital footprint to maintain steady balance sheet growth.
So I think we're set up well as it relates to the balance sheet for continued growth, but also continued mixing of both the loan and earning asset side as well as the funding side.
-- Michael Sumbs, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
Priorities for 2027 focus on margin optimization and onboarding higher-yield financial technology clients.
We remain focused on building on that momentum and delivering stronger financial performance.
