Iren: 3 Key Takeaways for Long-Term Investors

Source The Motley Fool

Key Points

  • Revenue backlog grew to over $20 billion, with two-thirds from investment-grade customers.

  • AI cloud revenue nearly tripled quarter over quarter to $200 million.

  • Some recent contracts include customer prepayments covering up to 90% of GPU capital expenditures.

On its fiscal 2027 first-quarter earnings call, held on Nov. 5, 2026, Iren (NASDAQ:IREN) announced that its revenue backlog crossed $20 billion. The infrastructure owner controls its land and power assets, allowing it to scale compute deployment efficiently. Three things management said stand out.

1. Customer Prepayments and GPU Financing Reduce Capital Requirements

Customer prepayments can cover up to 90% of graphics processing unit (GPU) capital expenditures (CapEx), shortening cash payback periods on deployment investments.

On a 5-year contract of $20 million per megawatt and with the prepayment covering 50% of GPU CapEx, we get a payback on the GPUs of 18 months.
-- Anthony Lewis, Chief Financial Officer

2. Infrastructure Ownership Provides Flexibility to Pace Expansion

Owning grid connections, land, and physical infrastructure protects the business from long-term lease liabilities while allowing management to adjust project timing based on market conditions.

We're not building into 20-year co-location liabilities where we're building assets. We get the choice when and how to build on top of those assets rather than be forced to double down when markets are not conducive.
-- Daniel Roberts, Co-Founder and Co-Chief Executive Officer

3. Computing Demand Drives Higher Pricing and Contract Extensions

Strong customer demand for artificial intelligence (AI) workloads enables price increases across long-term agreements and older hardware generations.

We signed a short-term contract at $40 million a megawatt. And importantly, older generation H100s, we just recontracted at double the original contract price.
-- Daniel Roberts, Co-Founder and Co-Chief Executive Officer

Looking Ahead

Artificial intelligence cloud revenue nearly tripled quarter over quarter. Vertically integrated site development and low-cost convertible debt provide long-term operational flexibility.

The capacity behind the more than $4 billion of ARR is fully funded. The additional $6 billion of planned expansion CapEx sits against $12 billion to $15 billion of sources before converts [convertible notes/debt] or equity.
-- Daniel Roberts, Co-Founder and Co-Chief Executive Officer

Management continues to prioritize capital efficiency and disciplined asset development across its global data center pipeline.
